Fayetteville Downtown Alliance Organization (Fall 2014)Students from Prof. Dena Breece's ACC 4900 class had an opportunity to apply audit practices learned through the completion of an audit project during the semester. Students were expected to effectively use audit techniques and appropriate audit language to audit the cash collection internal controls for the Downtown Alliance (DTA), which is a local not-profit organization in Fayetteville, NC. Students developed the cash receipts internal control questionnaire; performed an inquiry interview of the past president, Dr. Hank Parfitt; wrote the cash receipts internal control narrative; and with the assistance of Professor Breece, made recommendations for the DTA Board of Directors to consider. All of the recommendations were approved by the DTA Board of Directors. This project serves as a practical learning activity that can be listed on the student’s resume under experience. Professor Breece finalized the project by developing, obtaining board approval, and implementing the DTA Policies & Procedures on Event Cash Handling and associated forms.
Fayetteville Publishing Company (Spring 2014)
Students from Prof. Dena Breece's ACC 4910 class conducted an internal controls audit of the Fayetteville Publishing Company, the publisher of the The Fayetteville Observer newspaper.
The student's audit of effective internal control covered the following areas: accounts payable, fixed assets and depreciation, a non-routine estimate, cash receipts, and the control environment. Students held the entrance and exit conference of the audit to discuss the engagement letter and audit opinion letter. A written document and brief discussion to provide evidence of audit workpapers was due at the completion of the assignment. This project serves as a practical learning activity that can be listed on the student’s resume under experience.
