Coming out of high school, I had the
ability as a softball pitcher and
the GPA (grade point average) to go anywhere. I was headed to a
major university, but I knew playing softball at that level wouldn’t
allow time for other activities. I wanted to be a true student-athlete,
to be part of a nationally ranked team, excel in my sport and still
have time to do other things on campus. Methodist University afforded
me all that.
Off the field, I’d say time management is the biggest struggle.
But the coaches here help you. They teach you time management. They
make sure you know you are here for an education first. My teammates
are just as serious. We track our overall team GPA, and you don’t
want to be the one to let the team down. We don’t just have
teams here, we have a program. When you have a program, you are
part of something. You have alumni; you are part of a softball tradition
and you can feel it.
To any student-athlete looking at MU, I’d say get ready to
become part of something bigger than yourself. Be ready to work.
But be ready to have fun and make friends too. I’m proud to
wear this uniform.
