Academic Services Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t know what I want to major in, what should I do?
Although it is often thought that most students know the major they want, 20-50% of students in the US are actually undecided upon entering college. Further, up to 80% of students nationally are uncertain about the major they have chosen and almost 60% of US undergraduates change their major at least once.

What can I do with a major in ____ ?
Visit the staff in the Office of Career Services in the Berns Center or visit them online at www.methodist.edu/careerservices

Who should be my advisor?
Your advisor should be a faculty member in the Department in which you are majoring. For example, if you are a Sociology Major, then your advisor should be a Sociology faculty member. Talk to the professors in your department to decide which advisor is right for you. A good advisor should be accessible on a regular basis (all faculty members have their office hours posted on their office doors), knowledgeable (of the field as well as the Methodist University policies and graduation requirements) and interested in your future success.

Why did only 15 s.h. of credit transfer in instead of the full 21 s.h. I have completed?
There are various reasons why courses do not transfer from institution to institution. If you think there is a course which should have been accepted by Methodist University based on the course descriptions from here and your previous institution, simply schedule an appointment with the Registrar at 1-800-488-7110 extension 7318, (910) 630-7318. Please be aware that the course description should read the same in order to warrant a meeting.

How many hours do I need to graduate with a degree in ___?
Read your catalogue carefully in order to determine the requirements for your degree.

What is the difference between a B.S. and a B.A. degree?
Unless your degree is a strict liberal arts degree (such as English, etc.), the difference is a matter of preference as far as choice in core courses. Essentially the difference is the foreign language requirement for a B.A. versus an extra science and an extra math course for a B.S. Science majors usually take the B.S. degree because the core science courses are fulfilled by the major courses.

What does "catalogue year" mean?
Each year changes are made to the Academic Catalogue. The catalogue that applies to you is the catalogue in existence when you first attended the college. For example, if you came to Methodist in Fall 2002, your “catalogue year” is 2002-2003.

How many hours is a full load?
A full course load is 12 or more semester hours. This is the minimum number of hours to be classified as a full-time student.

Will I graduate in four years if I enroll in 12 s.h. each semester?
In order to graduate in four years, students need to take a minimum of 15 s.h. per semester; however, if the student has a double major, minor and/or concentration, it is unlikely that he or she will graduate in four years. Consult your catalogue and create a four-year plan to ensure a timely graduation.

What GPA do I need to graduate?
Generally, students need to maintain a GPA of 2.00 or higher a) Overall, b) in residency, c) in the major, d) in the minor and e) in the concentration. However, some majors require higher GPA’s so be sure to check your academic catalogue for the GPA requirements for your specific major, minor and/or concentration.

How do I change my major? My advisor?
It will be necessary to attain an advisor in your major as soon as possible. Visit the faculty members in your department to decide who is the best match for you. A form obtained from the Registrar’s Office will switch you to a new advisor. You may switch advisors at any time. The same form may be used to switch your major or minor. You are encouraged to keep this information up-to-date in order for our records to be accurate.

Is this the only time I can see that tutor?
Some tutors have the flexibility to schedule an appointment with you at a time not posted on the present schedule.

Is there only one-on-one tutoring?
Some tutors have the capability to work with more than one student at a time. It varies based on the particular tutor.

When are the CLEP tests offered?
You must call (910) 630-7151 and schedule an appointment to take the CLEP test at least two days in advance. You must first pay the Business Office the $64.00 fee to take the test. Allow yourself 2-3 hours for each test you plan to take.

What is Pre-registration?
Pre-registration is an opportunity to schedule courses ahead of time. It is advantageous to utilize this opportunity in order to have the courses you want/need. Based upon your four-year plan and the availability of courses, you may register with your academic advisor.
