Celebrating 17 Seasons: A retrospective of 17 years of performance - May 18, 2008

COS presented Coronation Anthem No. 1 "Zadok the Priest" by Handel; "Kyrie eleison" from the Mozart Mass in C Minor (Anne Rogers, soprano); "Introit and Kyrie" and "Sanctus" from the Fauré Requiem (Julie Love, pianist); "Dies irae" and "Lacrimosa" from the Mozart Requiem; "Gloria" and "Agnus Dei" from Beethoven's Mass in C Major (Donna Werner, soprano, Ruth Miner, contralto, Sean Closz, tenor, Jonathan de Araujo, bass); "Dona nobis pacem" from Bach's Mass in B Minor; "In Buchenwald" from McCullough's Holocaust Cantata (Zach May, cello); "How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings" from Brahms' A German Requiem; "Worthy Is the Lamb" and "Amen" (with "Hallelujah" as an encore) from Handel's Messiah. Alice Ann Campbell, accompanist; with orchestra. Maestro Alan Porter retired as conductor and artistic director of COS after this concert.

A Tribute to African American Music - March 16, 2008

God's Trombones --music by Roy Ringwald, poetry by James Weldon Johnson (Ernestine Smith and Wesley Rowell, readers; Sharon McNair and Lorenzo Jones, solist; Julie Love, piano); additional choral and solo works. The Heritage Restoration Chorale, directed by Denis Payton, opened the performance with four spirituals. Alan Porter, conductor; Alice Ann Campbell, accompanist.

A Baroque Christmas Concert - December 11, 2007

Midnight Mass for Christmas by Charpentier; "There Shall a Star Come Out of Jacob" from Christus by Mendelssohn; A Festival of Carols by Theron Kirk; "Hallelujah" from Messiah by Handel; Alan Porter, conductor; Alice Ann Campbell; accompanist. Handbell players from Hay Street United Methodist Church opened the performance. COS also participated at the tree lighting celebration at Cape Fear Valley Rehabilitation Center on December 2.

Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps by David McCullough - March 15, 2007

Alan Porter, conductor; Alice Ann Campbell, piano; Zach May, cello; Anne Rogers, soprano; Sharon McNair, soprano; Stephan Barnicle, bass-baritone; Barbara Rodbell and Mayon Weeks, readers; with Barbara Rodbell and Sidney Shacknow sharing personal experiences about the Holocaust. The concert opened with music by the 71st Classical Middle School Seventh and Eighth Grade Chorus. COS also performed selections at 71st Classical Middle School on March 15 and at Beth Israel Synagogue on April 15.

Mass of the Children by John Rutter  - October 24, 2004

Alan Porter, conductor.  Soloists were Jeanne Ennis, soprano, and Louis Seymour, baritone.  COS was joined by the combined children's choirs of Village Christian Academy and Village Baptist Church.  Marten and Ronda Spena directed the children's choirs.  COS also presented three sixteenth century English anthems:  "If Ye Love Me, Keep My Commandments" by Thomas Tallis; "Laudate Nomen Domini" by Christopher Tye; and "Call to Remembrance" by Richard Farrant.

Broadway!   - May 22, 2004

COS presented selections from Gypsy, The Sound of Music, The Fantasticks, Sweet Charity, Purlie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Chicago, Big River, and Le Misérables.  The chorus was accompanied by Alice Ann Moore on piano, Greg Porter on bass guitar, and Ted Zislis on percussion.  As ever,  Alan Porter conducted.

Requiem (KV 626) by Mozart - March 14, 2004

Alan Porter, conductor.  Soloists were Anne Rogers, soprano; Robin Lynne Frye, mezzo-soprano; John Daniecki, tenor; and Robert Holquist, bass.  The concert opened with the Mozart motet Ave Verum.

'Tis the Season! - December 14, 2003

For the Fayetteville Symphony holiday pops concert, Alan Porter lead COS and the orchestra in a selection of holiday favorites.  Timothy Meyer Altman was the guest conductor for the FSO, and the Heritage Restoration Chorale under the direction of Denise Payton also performed.  Soloists for the COS pieces were Kristin Campbell and Sharon McNair.

Alan Porter, conductor.  Soloists for the Handel work were Jeanne Plyant and Lisa Lemza, sopranos; Su Vick and Constance Dees, altos; Tommy Vick and Phil Provencher, tenors; and Franklin Rhoads and Davis Gaines, basses.   Soloists for the Mozart work were Anne Rogers, soprano; Ruth Miner, contralto; Justin Schwann, tenor; and A.J. Macks II, bass.  Special guests were OMEGA, the Cape Fear High School a capella vocal ensemble, under the direction of Jason Britt.

Saint Paul by Mendelssohn - October 28, 2001

COS performed "The Conversion," part I of this oratorio.  Alan M. Porter, conductor; Ronda Gale Spena, mezzo-soprano, John Daniecki, tenor; Robert Holquist, bass-baritone.

Choral music of Brahms and Mozart - May 6, 2001

COS performed the Brahms works Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny), op. 54; Psalm 13 , op. 27; Rhapsodie , op. 53 (for alto, featuring Mary Gayle Greene, mezzo-soprano); and Naenie (Dirge), op. 82.  Soloists for Mozart's Vesperae Sollenes de Confessore (Solemn Vespers), K. 339, were Jeanne Ennis, soprano; Ruth Miner, contralto; Byron Pritchard, tenor; and A.J. Macks, II, baritone.  10 years after Mr. Porter organized a community choral concert in honor of the bicentennial of Mozart's death, Mr. Porter was once again behind the baton conducting Mozart.

A Holiday Spectacular - December 10, 2000

This year's Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra pops concert, conducted by Maestro Robert Gutter, featured Carla LeFevre, soprano, and the Holiday Youth Choir conducted by Larry Dickens.

Three Settings of Te Deum Laudamus   - October 29, 2000

The Utrecht Te Deum by Handel, Te Deum for the Empress Marie Therese by Haydn, and the Budvari Te Deum by Kodaly comprised this concert.  Soloists were Kristin Campbell, soprano; Ruth Miner, contralto; and Christopher Beaver, bass-baritone.  Our special guest was tenor John Daniecki, who performed two arias by Fetis and Rossini.

Holiday Classics  - December 12, 1999

The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Robert Gutter performed their holiday pops concert with COS and a Festival Chorus conducted by Donna Parnell.  Soloist was Robert Williams.

A Celebration of American Choral Music - November 7, 1999

This concert featured music from American composers such as William Billings, Alice Parker, Stephen Foster, Aaron Copland, and Randall Thompson.  Alice Ann Moore was the pianist and Alan Porter was the conductor.

Mass in C Major , Op. 86, by Beethoven and Requiem , Op. 48, by Faure - May 2, 1999

Soloists for this concert were Anne Robins, soprano; Bethany Surridge, soprano; Valerie Oyen-Larsen, mezzo-soprano; Timoth Lloyd, tenor; and Louis Seymour, baritone.  Once again Alan Porter was behind the baton.  The Faure Requiem was presented as a special performance on April 11, 1999, at the Eighty-Second Division Memorial Chapel on Fort Bragg.

Community Messiah - December 16, 1998

This year's walk-in Messiah was hosted by Hay Street United Methodist Church. Alan M. Porter was the conductor and the soloists were Anne Robins , soprano; Victoria Phillips, mezzo-soprano; William Kim, tenor; Christopher Beaver, Bass-baritone.

Glorious Glorias - March 29, 1998

Messa di Gloria by Giacomo Puccini and Gloria by Francis Poulenc (a.k.a. the "Glorious Glorias ") were performed for the spring concert. The soloists were soprano, Anne Robins; tenor, William Martin; bass, Robert Holquist.

Sing-along Messiah - December 17, 1997

Fayetteville Community Church hosted the sing-along. Alan M. Porter was the conductor and the soloists were Anne Robins , soprano; Valerie Oyen-Larsen , mezzo-soprano; Byron Pritchard , tenor; Louis Seymour.

Christmas Pops - December 14, 1997

At the Belk's Christmas Pops Celebration C.O.S. joined the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Robert Gutter in a program of seasonal music. Kimberly Dunn was the soprano soloist and there were plenty of children in the Combined Youth Chorus.

Schubert Celebration - November 2, 1997

The Magnificat, Mass in A flat major, and The Omnipotence by Franz Schubert (1797-1828). 1997 was the bicentennial of Schubert's birth. Soloists were soprano, Suzanne Ishee ; mezzo-soprano, Valerie Oyen-Larsen ; tenor, James Powers ; baritone, Louis Seymour.

Open Rehearsal - October 20, 1997

Dr. James Vail conducted an open rehearsal of COS. Dr. Vail visited Fayetteville under the auspices of the American Guild of Organists.

Patriotic Pops - June 29, 1997

COS joined the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra in this free outdoor concert of patriotric music and songs in Rowan Street Park, Fayetteville.

Kirkpatrick; Candelight Carol by John Rutter; I saw three ships arr. by Mack Wilberg, A Christmas Flourish by Randolph Alan Bass; A musicological journey through the twelve days of Christmas by Craig Courtney; " Hallelujah chorus " from Handel's Messiah.

Sicut cervus by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, intonation by Angela Sutherland, soprano; All Breathing Life , Sing and Praise Ye the Lord by J.S. Bach; God is our refuge by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Part of this program was performed on October 26, 1996 to the North Carolina Music Teachers Association.
