Darlene Hopkins
Counselor and Psychotherapist

Ms. Hopkins insists that everyone call her by her first name. “Please call me ‘Darlene’,” she says. “It is important to me to have a face -to - face, adult- to- adult, informal relationship with students. Counseling is about collaboration and empowerment, not guidance and advice giving. My experience has taught me that people solve their own problems and rise above their obstacles when someone believes in their ability to do so.” Ms. Hopkins studied Educational and Counseling Psychology in the Graduate School of Indiana University. She graduated from Indiana University with honors and has earned several credentials since. She is nationally certified as a psychologist and as a counselor. She is licensed by the North Carolina Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and is a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist. She has more than 25 years of experience in counseling and has served Methodist University as the director of Counseling and Psychological Services since 1993.

Linda Szulc
Coordinator of Disability Services

Ms. Szulc has been working with young people during her entire career of 25 + years. She says, “ I get a great deal of satisfaction from helping students overcome the barriers and be successful.” Ms. Szulc’s academic background is in sociology and she has extensive training in counseling. She is a great listener and problem solver. She has been in charge of coordinating the provision of disability services at Methodist College since 2003. In addition, Ms. Szulc is a front line counselor who also manages the calendar for the Center. She is always encouraging students. “If you have a problem on your mind,” she says, “email me or stop by the office. We will chat and together find a way to a solution.”

Katie Smith
Counselor

Ms. Smith is one of the front line counselors at the Center for Personal Development. If you are in need of any assistance, have an issue that you would like to discuss, or if you would like to stop by the office just to chat please feel free to come in. Ms. Smith has been working in the human services field for 5+years. She has been and is currently a victim advocate volunteer for the Rape Crisis Center of Cumberland County. Over the past year Ms. Smith has worked with adolescences, as well as adults with Psychological Disorders. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Methodist College (now Methodist University) in the social science field. Katie expresses her love for helping others in her everyday life.
