Ms. Hopkins insists that everyone call her by her first
name. “Please call me ‘Darlene’,”
she says. “It is important to me to have a face -to
- face, adult- to- adult, informal relationship with students.
Counseling is about collaboration and empowerment, not guidance
and advice giving. My experience has taught me that people
solve their own problems and rise above their obstacles
when someone believes in their ability to do so.”
Ms. Hopkins studied Educational and Counseling Psychology
in the Graduate School of Indiana University. She graduated
from Indiana University with honors and has earned several
credentials since. She is nationally certified as a psychologist
and as a counselor. She is licensed by the North Carolina
Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and is a Licensed
Clinical Addictions Specialist. She has more than 25 years
of experience in counseling and has served Methodist University
as the director of Counseling and Psychological Services
since 1993.
