1. What is the First Year Experience
(FYE) Program?
The FYE program is an intentionally structured academic
and residential program designed to support and challenge
first year students in making a successful transition from
high school to college.
2. What is the residential component?
All FYE program participants are housed in Pearce Hall,
a 52 bed suite style facility that includes an upstairs
and downstairs lobby, laundry facilities, cable, and 1 networked
Internet connection per resident.
The staff includes 4 upperclass resident assistants carefully chosen
and trained to work with first year students. A full-time professional
Residential Area Coordinator supervises the building. The Center
for Personal Development is also housed in the building.
Programs and activities targeted to the needs of first year students
are planned and presented by the building staff as well as faculty
and staff. Pearce Hall's student governance group will plan special
activities, such as trips to professional hockey and basketball
games, as well as to destinations such as Myrtle Beach, Washington,
D.C., and New York City.
3. What is the academic component?
FYE participants will be scheduled into a section of IDS
110, the MC orientation course, as a group. The course,
taught by experienced staff members, includes a number of
topics helpful to first year students including academic
success strategies, time management, diversity, and campus
resources. Due to scheduling restrictions, some programs
participants may be unable to schedule these particular
sections of the class.
4. How will this program benefit me?
You will become involved in a caring and supportive environment
designed to promote your success as a student. You will
become aware of campus resources and activities, build strong
friendships, and learn from the viewpoints of others. Research
from other schools with similar programs shows that students
in programs of this type are more successfully academically
and are more likely to stay in college. Many previous program
participants are now campus leaders.
5. Who should participate in this program?
Students who have at least a current 3.10 GPA and any student
who wants a successful and structured transition in their
first year. Students with a wide variety of interests have
participated including baseball players, vocalists, and
cheerleaders. Like any other opportunity of this type, your
success is limited only by the amount of time and effort
you invest in the program. While your can request your roommate,
they too must be accepted in the program to live with you.
6. How do I join this exciting program?
Simply complete the FYE
Application and submit along with your Application/Contract
and Lifestyle
Questionnaire to the address below. We will notify of
your program acceptance by late June.
