As this book starts, you think that you are in for a cupcake of a book like the “cupcake dresses” that adorn the walls of vintage clothing store, but this book deals with much larger themes. The main character Phoebe has just opened a vintage clothing store after working for the auction house Sotheby’s. The reader learns about Phoebe’s parents’ divorce, her father’s younger wife and infant, friends from Phoebe’s past, and a wonderful older lady who brings the reader in touch with some of the tragedies of World War II. You watch as Phoebe struggles with new romantic relationships, tries to overcome the death of her best friend, and teaches us all a little about clothes.
I enjoyed this book greatly and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in history, vintage clothing, and romance. I will be adding this title to my book list for my reading circle on love stories.
