E-Business Resources on the Web

There is a wealth of high-quality information on the Internet. The problem is that there is just as much, if not more, substandard information. This guide will help you to find those business resources on the Internet that provide some of the most reliable information.

Also keep in mind, the Internet does not just mean websites. Many scholarly journals and books are now available electronically. Click here to access the library's list of business databases, through which you can find journal articles. netLibrary is a special database which contains electronic books. Enter your topic in the keyword search and pull up entire books on the computer. Use the links below to direct you to websites with information on the following topics.



BPubs.com - Bpubs contains full-text business publications searchable by keyword as well as by subject category. Very well designed and easy to navigate, BPubs contains information on economics (policy, currency, and international economics), entrepreneurship (business plans, start-ups, and capital finance), finance and accounting, industry publications, intellectual property, internet and e-commerce, intellectual property, management science, marketing and sales, and small business.

BRINT.com - Brint.com is a knowledge portal focusing on business and technology information. The site contains hundreds of resources in the areas of general business, technology, knowledge management, and e-business. Well-laid out and easily navigated, site content is divided into subject group channels, resource pages, and community pages. The e-business category contains links to information and resources on strategy, e-Business, e-Commerce, customer relations management (CRM), supply chains, and advertising.

Business 2.0 - Launched in August 1998, Business 2.0 magazine strove to "help clarify and demystify the changing landscape of business and deliver practical, inviting, and in-depth information." The Business 2.0 web site has now grown beyond the magazine Business 2.0 to not only include the magazine but information 'channels' (eBusiness, Marketing, Investing, Technology) and links to research articles in categories named 'Insights' and 'Research' (which includes ebusiness statistics, news wire reports, book reviews, events and trade show listings, and discussion groups). The site also includes the current Business 2.0 magazine issue and the ability to search the magazines' archives.

BusinessWeek Online - In addition to being the online counterpart to BusinessWeek, this site offers free newsletters, a forums and chats arena, a "Today's Market" section (maintained by Standard and Poor's), and a "Stock Look Up" box which provides extensive company and industry snapshots from Standard and Poor's. "Internet", as an industry, is covered. This site is searchable and contains articles from both BusinessWeek and Business Week Online back to January 1991.

c/net.com - This site combines current business and technology news with trend analysis and comprehensive coverage of Internet technology products. E-commerce technology news is well covered and site content included analysis as well as commentary. The site contains links to other c/net networks, including mySimon (product and price comparisons) and ZDNet (comprehensive technology news and information).

Computer Security Resource Clearinghouse - This web site is maintained by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and contains information about a variety of computer security issues, products, and research of concern to Federal agencies, industry, and users. Provides extensive links to academic, government and professional sites containing information on computer security organizations, conferences, United States policies and documents, publications, and training resources.

ComputerWorld.com - Computerworld Inc., an information services company, provides current news analysis on the information technology sector of the economy. Additionally, this site offers focused IT information in their 'Knowledge Centers' and maintains well-designed "Communities" links. Each community on Computerworld.com is focused on a specific area of information technology and includes e-commerce. The e-commerce community includes discussion sections, feature stories, e-commerce news, and a side column containing quick links to other features, resources, services, and e-commerce related subject communities. The site includes a glossary and an event calendar.

CyberAtlas - CyberAtlas calls itself "the Web marketer's guide to online facts". The site provides readers with e-commerce statistics and Web marketing information and gathers online research on Internet demographics, market research, surveys and technology.

Digitrends.net - Digitrends.net calls itself "The Information Network for Interactive Marketers", providing national and international advertiser and advertising agency directories as well as information on e-commerce. The site is easy to navigate, with Digitrends Daily, eBiz Daily, and Features sections as well as a list of 'Directories' which contain links to case studies, advertising campaigns, ePayment, eResearch, and other electronic commerce topics.

ebusinessforum - This web site is produced by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a highly regarded information provider of objective analyses and forecasts in politics, economics, and business for more than 180 countries. The EIU also produces reports on strategic industries and in management science. The web site provides daily news analysis articles, articles on thought leadership and latest best practice, and links to the EIU Online Store, the EIU ViewsWire, conference listings, and other online magazines published by The Economist Group (including The Economist, The Journal of Commerce, Traffic World, and Air Cargo World). The Schreyer Business Library maintains print subscriptions to most of the journals published by the Economist Group, as well the EIU Country.

eBusiness Research Center - The eBusiness Research Center (eBRC) promotes research in electronic commerce, with an emphasis on marketing and management. It is a joint effort of the School of Information Sciences and Technology and the Smeal College of Business Administration at The Pennsylvania State University. The site provides a listing of Best Web Sites (business-to-customer and business-to-business), full-text eBRC White Papers and eBRC Working Papers, and links to network security web sites.

ecommerce-guide - Headquartered in Walldorf, Germany, SAP is "the world's largest inter-enterprise software company, and the world's third-largest independent software supplier overall." Their e-commerce guide contains product reviews, e-commerce news, e-commerce product and service announcements, information columns, a resources link (downloads, events calendar, EC Webopedia, Etailer Index, library), and a 'link vault' (links to books to purchase and/or read, commerce server providers, digital certificate providers, consortia sites, EC education sites, news groups, and e-zines). There are also links to a discussion list, discussion lists, and free newsletters.

eCommerce Guidebook - An educational site created by Net Nations Communications, Ltd., eCommerce Guidebook provides a tutorial for setting up secure, real time credit card transactions on business web sites, a directory of companies that provide payment gateways for online transactions, and list of information resources on the e-commerce industry.

E-Commerce Research Room - This site bills itself as "the Internet's largest and most comprehensive e-commerce resource and portal site." It has many links to articles on e-commerce, an E-Commerce Research Room, a page devoted to web marketing resources, and e-commerce business models and cases (these are available for a fee).

eMarketer - emarketer, provides information and resources on building, promoting, and maintaining a successful electronic business, and advertises itself as the "world's leading provider of internet statistics". This company publishes four free electronic newsletters (QuickeStats, DailyeNews, Dailyestats, WeeklyeNewsletter), maintains eBoards for online discussions on e-commerce, and operates an eStore where visitors can obtain reports on various topics related to electronic commerce.

Federal Electronic Commerce Program Office - An educational site maintained by the Office of Electronic Government, this site contains a list of federal e-commerce websites, a library, e-commerce reports, government pilots and projects, and a small business help corner.

Federal Trade Commission - The Federal Trade Commission web site contains advisory information on Internet security and privacy, consumer guides to e-payments, online investment opportunities, and online shopping tips. There are also many articles on e-commerce, and an information section for Internet businesses on e-commerce rules and regulations and Internet law cases.

Federation of International Trade Associations - This is the official web site of FITA and is an international trade and import-export portal and a comprehensive source for business-to-business information, news, events with links to 3,000 international trade related Web sites. Using the 'Web Resources' tab on the sites' home page, visitors can find links to international economics reports and journals, international business publications, news feeds, dictionaries and multilingual translation resources, a business travel guide, a listing of international chambers of commerce, and regional trade and economic statistics. The site also provides a bookstore, world trade news, articles about international trade, and the FITA Directory of International Trade Associations in North America.

Free Management Library - This is a comprehensive resource for nonprofit and for-profit business information, developed by Authenticity Consulting, LLC and hosted by The Management Assistance Program for Nonprofits of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. The site contains an index of 675 business topics broadly grouped into 72 categories on the home page. The 'E-Commerce' topic box contains a link to an extensive listing of information for beginning e-commerce entrepreneurs including overview articles on getting started (business assessments and business plans), understanding electronic data interchange (EDI), developing and managing a product or service, on-line store basics (management, marketing, and sales) and links to e-commerce information sites.

HBS Working Knowledge - The Harvard Business School's HBS Working Knowledge web site provides information on thirteen management subject areas including "E-Commerce & the Marketspace" and "Leadership, Strategy, & Competition". Each subject section contains feature articles, a web site review, a book review and are updated weekly. Past articles are archived and available at the site.

IDG.net - IDG (International Data Group) is a technology media conglomerate with more than 300 publications in 85 countries and an estimated monthly worldwide readership of 100 million. The "IT Directory" link on the main page contains an "E-Business" subject link featuring current news, feature stories, e-commerce research, and how-to articles. There are quick links to B2B, B2C, and e-commerce specific banking, investing, and technology.

Industry Standard - This is the online counterpart to the paper journal The Industry Standard. It features the entire magazine as well as 10 to 20 articles written only for online readers and posted daily. There are 17 newsletters associated with the web site, message board links, sections devoted to news, e-commerce, and company research (research is fee-based). The site also contains the 'Intelligence Store' and the 'Job Shop'.

International Web Police - This organization investigates, tracks, and records Internet crime and maintains a database of criminal Internet activity going back to 1986. Additionally, the group arbitrates complaints, prosecutes Internet criminals and has the authority to shut down Internet enterprises engaged in illegal activities. The site has quick links for reporting a crime, reporting a scam, or reporting terrorist activities. The site also contains a Child Safety Center and a Woman's Task Force.

Internet Advertising Resource Guide - This site specializes in providing information for Internet advertising. Created by Hairong Li, a professor of advertising at Michigan State University, the site provides links to e-journal news and research articles as well as extensive information on the planning, development, management, research and teaching of electronic commerce advertising.

internet.com - internet.com is owned by internet.com Corporation, who calls their site "The Internet Industry Portal." The site features 143 web sites, 260 e-mail newsletters, 136 on-line discussion forums, and 78 moderated e-mail discussion lists, and provides real-time news and information resources. Information is broken down in 14 broad areas ("channels") covering all aspects of electronic commerce and is easily searchable by keyword.

Jupiter Communications - Jupiter Communications is a for-profit company which provides strategic analysis and comprehensive views of industry trends, accurate forecasts and today's best practices, all backed by proprietary data. Jupiter's research is offered on a fee basis but its' web site also offers free access to an extensive listing of current corporate press releases. Visitors may register as a guest to view some research articles (searchable by keyword) for free.

NewsFactor Network - The NewsFactor Network is a community of ten sister sites that cover the entire gamut of e-commerce topics: Internet technology, e-commerce business news and information, industry analysis, and marketing. The sites offer up-to-the-minute information and original articles and commentary. There is a site for every need and interest in e-business, including CRM, wireless, and Linux. The sites are easily navigated and all content is archived and searchable.

NUA Internet Surveys - Created by the publishing and consulting firm NUA, this web site features e-commerce surveys by industry category; charts; graphs; and free newsletters including the monthly "What's New" newsletter detailing the latest NUA publications.

OECD online - This is the web site for the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, an international organization comprised of 29 member countries. The site is easy to navigate and contains links to all areas of OECD work, including their research in social welfare, agriculture, biotechnology, governance, and energy. Business related categories include their research in competition and regulatory reform, issues affecting the corporate sector, economics, finance and investment, the information society, issues in the enterprise, industry and service sectors, and growth. The site has an electronic commerce link containing articles on the worldwide ICT sector, e-commerce statistics, and information on e-commerce trade and taxation.

Red Herring - Red Herring (also a magazine; available at this web site) is a comprehensive ebusiness web site offering the ability to download white papers and special reports; access to professional research and newsletters (fee-based); an auction site; IPO news; venture capitalist and ebusiness start-up news; and a searchable stock market page. Red Herring also provides 'Herringtown' billed as "our comprehensive, searchable database of startups. Here, investors, Venture Capitalists, potential customers, strategic partners, suppliers and other technology professionals can search emerging companies, people, industries, and stage of funding directories at no cost." The e-magazine Red Herring is also available.

searchEBusiness.com - This site offers e-business news and information gathered from more than 800 other e-commerce related web sites. Although the site is primarily focused on e-commerce infrastructure (applications, core technologies, platforms, development), there are extensive links to e-commerce news headlines from a variety of web sources. The "Best EBusiness Web Links" section offers the editors' choices for best-of-the-web web sites in 14 subject areas. There is also an "EBusiness Career Center" which contains a searchable database of IT jobs (drawn from employer web sites) and a searchable directory of technical professionals.

TechWeb - Owned by CMP Media, TechWeb content is provided by three company publications: InformationWeek, InternetWeek, and Network Computing. This site focuses on Internet information technologies and includes current news, reviews, analysis, opinion, and research. Specific e-business information is available on the E-Business page, accessible from the main web page via the 'technologies' tab.

WeBi: Wharton e-Business Initiative - WeBi is a partnership of business leaders, Wharton faculty, and students engaged in interdisciplinary research in the workings of the e-commerce marketplace. The web site contains feature articles on e-business subjects and a link to Knowledge@Wharton (via the "Resources & Tools" tab), a free online resource of business research, analysis, and information published by the Wharton Business School.

Webmonkey - Voted "Best Web Development Site 2000" by Brill's Content, Webmonkey provides tutorials for everything from the basics of website-building to learning dHTML and XML. Webmonkey is a product of Wired Digital, the company that created the HotBot search engine (http://www.hotbot.com) and that produces Wired magazine. The e-business section is designed to be an introduction to electronic commerce and has many useful links arranged in a how-to library. Sections include authoring, design, multimedia, e-business, programming, backend, and jobs.

Workz.com - This web site targets the small e-commerce entrepreneur and contains information for the beginning electronic business operator. In addition to a many free newsletters, the site contains How-To Guides (Build Your Web Site, Attract Customers, Make Money, Save Money), an informational 'Topics' box (site design, site operations, web e-commerce, web marketing, web advertising, international information) and a Small Business Directory (billed as an "internet phone book of products, services, and specials offers for workz.com visitors and subscribers"). The international information link provides articles of interest to international e-commerce entrepreneurs as well as a translator, glossary, web directory, currency information, affiliate program information, and information on trade regulations and laws which affect international e-commerce.

WSReview.com - Formerly EconWorld, this site is now owned by Thomson Media. Specializing in business intelligence, e-technology and e-technology implementation, web marketing, and order fulfillment, this portal provides current B2B news and industry analysis. The site also offers a glossary of e-business terms, an industry events calendar, an associations listing, book recommendations, and white papers.
