This guide is intended to assist students performing research in the area of Psychology. It suggests both print and Internet resources available, but it is by no means a comprehensive list of all materials available either in the Library or on the Web but is a representative sample.

Online Catalog

The Online Catalog is an excellent place to start your research. It will allow you to identify books in the Davis Memorial Library about your topic in Psychology. The Online Catalog is available from any Internet accessible computer at http://davislibrary.methodist.edu/. Use the Keyword search to locate materials. Type in the concepts you are looking for, using "and" to combine terms (e.g. child and development).

Journal Articles

Electronic databases are used to identify journal, magazine, or newspaper articles on a particular topic. Some databases are designated as full-text, which means that the whole text of the article is available in that database. You can print, save, or email that article. When using a database or any other tool in the Library, always write down the full citation to an article (author, article title, journal title, volume, issue, date, and pages) so you will have this information for your bibliography.
If the article is not available in full-text use the Journal Holdings List to identify which periodicals are owned by the library (print copies available in the library or on the web at http://www.methodist.edu/library/elect/jrnllist.htm. Also, try Journal Finder to see if the journal, and its articles, is available in another database to which the Library subscribes.
For a list of additional databases, visit http://www.methodist.edu/library/elect/bysubj/psyc.htm.

Psychology Specific Resources

PsycINFO
PsycInfo is the standard resource in Psychology. This database covers journal articles from 1887-present and indexes over 1,900 different publications. On the search screen, you can limit to articles in full-text from the companion database PsycArticles. Another limit is “publication date greater than 1997.” Click the “Change” button to choose from additional limits including language, age group, and population. Use the thesaurus to identify the appropriate terms for your searching. For articles not available in PsycArticles, try the Journal Finder link to see if the article is available elsewhere. Please logout when you are finished using this database.

PsycArticles
PsycArticles is a full-text database covering fifty-five journals. Content comes from the American Psychological Association (APA), the Canadian Psychological Association, and others. Results may be limited to scholarly journals only (a few of the titles are not scholarly). The “Advanced Search” allows for more complex searching including limiting the search to a specific author, document title, and publication title.

Medical Resources

Health Source: Nursing/Academic

Health Source: Nursing/Academic is partially a full-text database, with some articles having text and others not. More than 550 journals have full-text available. Use the symbols to guide you to the text, or limit your search screen to full-text only. The search screen allows users to limit to scholarly resources, publication date, a specific publication, and others. This database covers psychology, psychiatry, and medical topics. A medical dictionary is available on the toolbar.

Medline (PubMed)

Medline is “NLM's premier bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences.” Over 4,800 journals are indexed here.

There is a small amount of full-text in Medline. For the rest, you will need to use Journal Finder to see if the journal title is available electronically. Journal Finder is available from the Electronic Resources page at the library’s website. Type in the name of the journal to search. The computer icon means it is available electronically, and the open book icon means that the library subscribes to the title. Check the dates available to the ones on your article. If the article is not available, use Interlibrary loan to obtain a copy of the article from another library. Please allot at least a week for the article to arrive. When conducting searches in Medline, limiting your search is essential. At a minimum, limit to English. You can also limit to human or animal, gender, ages, and more. For clinical work, you should limit to human. MESH, Medical Subject Headings, is the terminology used in Medline. You can use the MESH database to look up the correct terminology or let the system try to convert your search automatically. Converting may miss some concepts.

Reference Materials

Planning Your Research

If you are working on an extensive project, plan enough time to research your topic, gather your materials, read them, and compose and review your project. The reference librarians and your instructor can help you with your research process. For items not available at the DML, Interlibrary Loan is an option if you have budgeted enough time for the items to be ordered and arrive (up to two weeks). Forms for ordering books and articles are available at the Library or from the Library’s website under the Library Services link.
