About Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan is a service of the Davis Memorial Library that provides students, faculty, and staff with books and articles that are not owned by the Library.  Books are borrowed from institutions across the U.S.  Articles are mailed, faxed, or emailed to the Library from institutions across the U.S. and Canada.  As such, please plan your research accordingly; Interlibrary loan books can take 5-10 business days to arrive.  Articles can take 1-10 business days to arrive.

Eligible Borrowers

  • Interlibrary loan services are provided to current students, faculty, and staff at Methodist University.

Eligible Materials

  • Patrons can request books and articles that the Library does not own.

Borrowing Process

Place Request

  • Interlibrary loan requests can be submitted online or in the Library.  Patrons must complete the appropriate Interlibrary loan request form.  Please provide complete citation information for each request; incomplete citations will delay your request.

Request a BOOK

  1. First check the Library's catalog to see if the item is available in the Library.
  2. If the item is not available, place a request online or in the Library, by completing an Interlibrary Loan Request form. Be sure to put as much info about the item as possible (author, title, ISBN, etc.)

Request an ARTICLE

  1. First check Journal Finder to see if the Library subscribes to the journal you need.
  2. If the item is not available, place a request online or in the Library, by completing an Interlibrary Loan Request form. Be sure to put as much info about the item as possible (author, title, ISSN, volume, issue, etc.)

Pickup Request

  • Requests are processed Monday through Friday, during normal business hours. Patrons are notified by telephone or email when their requests arrive. Requests must be picked up at the Circulation Desk in the Library.

Students @ Off-campus Locations

Students who meet certain criteria are eligible for distance learning services at the Library. If you are enrolled in Online or Off-campus courses and live more than 50 miles from campus you have more delivery options.

  • Books must be picked up within 7 days of arrival. Articles must be picked up within 30 days of arrival. Students who do not pickup their requests will be charged the costs of borrowing the items. See Fines, Overdues, and Fees below.

Loan Periods

Books

  • Books are loaned with a due date set by the lending institution.  Due dates can range from 3 to 6 weeks depending on the lender.

Articles

  • Articles are provided free for charge and do not need to be returned.

Renewals

  • Renewal policies are set by the lending institution.  Requests for renewal must be submitted before an item’s due date, without exception.
  • To request a renewal pleast contact the Coordinator of Interlibrary Loan using the Contact Info below.

Failure to Pickup Requests

  • Books must be picked up within 7 days of notification. Articles must be picked up with 30 days of notification.
  • Department Chairs are notified when Faculty or Staff fail to pickup their requests.

Lost & Damaged Items

  • The Library's normal policy applies: all patrons are responsible for fees and/or charges associated with items that are lost or damaged while in their possession.

Fines

Overdue Books

  • Faculty and Staff who have overdue items will have their borrowing priviledges suspended until the items are returned.
  • Faculty and Staff are not charged overdue fees.
  • Faculty and Staff who repeatedly fail to return items will have their Interlibrary Loan priviledges suspended.
