Letter # 2
To:  [No salutation]
From:  Lafayette
Date:  October 19, 1828
In French

La Grange 19 October 1828
An absence of a few days has delayed our correspondence, Sir, and I do not want to waste any time to answer you. I am not in a position of being able to write to the Presidents of Chile and Peru, since I have no connection with them. And with the actual situation in Peru it would be probably even more embarrassing. I thought that some letters of introduction to the American Secretaries might be of some use. I even wrote to Bogota in Rio Janeiro in case Mr. Meoti should stop there. I shall send you tomorrow a letter addressed to him and another one for General Berbur who must be around Guatemala for the connection of the two seas. I would have written to Colonel Soyer if he had not been a personal friend of yours. You honor me very much in believing that I could be of some influence in the part of the American hemisphere. My two colleagues to whom I am expressing my very best regards will recall of the reputation I have been given to write letters of this kind for friends who believed they were of some value; but this remembrance gave me no scruple on the matter especially when it gives me the opportunity to express to you my highest consideration and devotion.
