Letter #17
To: Benjamin Pierce
From: John Brooks
Date: February 21, 1824
In French
Medford 21
February 1824
Dear Sir,
Your letter dated the 13th of January did not come to hand until the evening
of the 17th of the same month. It arrived here by mail while I was attending
the meeting of the Standing Committee in Boston that day. It would have
been very pleasing to me to have been earlier in possession of Mrs. Ballard's
application, as we found the funds sufficient to allow a very respectable
dividend among the applicants, leaving a surplus of about $300. At the
next meeting of the Committee, which will be I think in early June, her
case shall be attended to. A little before that time, however, have the
goodness to drop me a line on the subject.
You are I presume pleased with the national compliment to our old
friend Lafayette. High as it is, it is richly merited. Should he accept
the invitation, we shall give him a soldier's welcome recognizing days
of yore. I remain with very affectionate regard, dear sir, your obedient
servant
J. Brooks
