MBA 500 ADVANCED MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING
(3 sh)
This course emphasizes the use of accounting information for internal
planning and control purposes. Participants learn how to evaluate
business performance and make strategic decisions in golf, tennis,
and resort management. Major topics include cost behavior, concepts
of opportunity costs, cost-volume-profit models, cost allocation,
budgeting, and cost variance analysis. Course activities include
lecture, doing problem sets using computer applications where applicable,
and industry-specific case studies.
MBA 501 EXECUTIVE SPEAKER SERIES (1 sh)
A series of lectures will be delivered by industry leaders during
each weekend residency. Students are expected to relate relevant
material discussed by speakers in classes throughout the curriculum.
Each student will enroll in this class during the first term of
study. Attendance is required for at least 20 of the 24 sessions
for passage of the course. The course will carry an Incomplete (I)
grade until the attendance requirements are met when the grade will
be changed to a Pass (P). This course does not count in determination
of the student GPA.
MBA 510 MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS (3 sh)
This course covers efficient resource allocation and the application
of the analytical tools of economic theory to decision making by
managers. The curriculum is designed to show students how to use
various tools that comprise the economics of effective management
for the profit-maximizing firm. Upon successful completion of the
course, students will be able to calculate and apply price elasticity,
employ a statistical regression analysis, perform cost analyses,
and display competency in other areas of managerial economics.
MBA 520 ADVANCED FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
(3 sh)
This course provides a working knowledge of the tools and analytical
conventions used in the practice of corporate financial decision-making.
Students will study and analyze fundamental decisions that financial
managers face in issues related to capital budgeting, cost of capital,
dividend policy, long-term financing and mergers, and working capital
management. Course activities include lecture, problem sets, and
industry-specific case studies.
MBA 530 LEGAL ENVIRONMENT OF GOLF, TENNIS,
AND RESORT INDUSTRIES (3 sh)
This course will highlight the importance of the legal and regulatory
environment as it relates to the focus industries. Through case
analysis, critical thinking exercises, hypothetical situations,
role playing, and team activities, the student will explore legal
issues that involve contracts, torts, business organizations, real
estate development, environmental regulation, employment and labor
law, risk management and insurance, safety and security, and litigation
as it relates to the golf, tennis, and resort industries.
MBA 540 ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP (3
sh)
Students will explore historical and contemporary leadership and
organizational behavior theories. Related cases and hypothetical
situations associated with the focus industries will be analyzed.
The course will draw on behavioral scenarios to understand organizational
effectiveness and change processes that can be used to improve organizational
performance. The course makes complex ideas of organizational behavior
understandable using explanations, examples, and real-life student
experiences. Teams will be utilized throughout the course for presentations
of cases.
MBA 550 MARKETING MANAGEMENT (3 sh)
Successful organizations match the objectives and resources of the
firm with the needs and opportunities of the target markets. The
focus of the course is how marketing contributes to the delivery
of value to individual and business consumers at a profit in golf,
tennis, and resort management. Emphasis is placed on the managerial
activities of strategic planning, market and competitive analyses,
customer behavior evaluation, value assessment, market segmentation,
targeting, positioning, and marketing mix decisions.
MBA 560 INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AND E-BUSINESS
(3 sh)
Students will examine how organizations use technology and innovative
business models to effectively adapt to rapid changes in the marketplace.
The course provides a framework for evaluating various information
technology alternatives and managing information technology resources
within the organization, including the development of Web sites
to strategically enhance corporate profit and further serve customers
through the e-business process.
MBA 570 APPLIED BUSINESS STATISTICS (3
sh)
The student will examine the application of statistical analysis,
hypothesis testing, and regression analysis in business decision-making.
The course will focus on the utilization of statistical methods
as applied to business problems and operations. Descriptive statistics,
probability and random variables, sampling and statistical inference,
regression analysis, chi-square analysis, and analysis of variance
will be investigated. The use of a statistical software program
will be used for homework assignments and computer projects.
MBA 591 GOLF, TENNIS & RESORT OPERATIONS
(3 sh)
Our service industry orientation is to provide members and guests
with experiences that attract and retain them for life. Management's
ability to make golf, tennis, and other resort attractions and amenities
such satisfying experiences requires business skills in planning,
programming, construction, financial management, promotion, marketing,
and risk management. Such topics are explored so that facilities
will operate effectively.
MBA 592 AGRONOMY & ENVIRONMENT (3
sh)
Agronomy & Environment is designed to help students learn to
plan, organize, lead, and control the various aspects of facility
and turf management in the focus industries. Students will develop
an understanding of the issues encountered in scientifically-appropriate
and environmentally-correct management of golf, tennis, and resort
facilities. Pinehurst Course Number 8 and other industry examples
will serve as case studies.
MBA 593 REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT (3 sh)
Real Estate is designed to prepare students to become adept in planning,
organizing, leading, and controlling the various aspects of real
estate development. Students will develop an understanding of the
issues involved in the effective management of real estate associated
with golf, tennis, and resort and club management, including real
estate law, forms of ownership, and encumbrances and easements.
MBA 594 ADVANCED FOOD & BEVERAGE
MANAGEMENT(3 sh)
Advanced Food and Beverage Management is designed to train students
to become adept in planning, organizing, leading, and controlling
food and beverage management. Students will develop an understanding
of the managerial issues encountered in the introduction, operation,
and maintenance of food and beverage entities within their organizations.
Food, beverage, and labor controls will be considered within the
context of the golf, tennis and resort industries.
MBA 599 CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE (3 sh)
This course will be individually tailored to each student, considering
the student's career goals and academic interests. Students will
be required to take the Master of Business Administration Major
Field Test developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) as
part of the Capstone course.
