MJA695 Special Topics – Leadership in Dangerous
Situations
In
this problem based learning course, graduate students were presented with
the problem of preparing police first line leaders to lead in dangerous
situations. The students were tasked with determining what they needed
to learn to create training that would enable police first line leaders
to lead in dangerous situations. The students chose to study the Apex,
North Carolina chemical fire. This involved reading various studies of
the response to the chemical fire by emergency responders, interviewing
the Apex Fire and Police Chiefs, and a tour of the sites and geographical
area impacted by the incident. The students created self-paced online
instruction in leading in dangerous situations and a multi-media tabletop
exercise based on the incident. Eight police first line leaders completed
the online instruction and then participated in the tabletop exercise
which was conducted in the Apex Police Department training room.
