August 22, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The USA South Conference office released the preseason polls today for cross country, soccer and volleyball. The polls are based on votes from each conference member's head coach without voting for themselves. Christopher Newport was selected as the top pick in both men's and women's cross country. The Methodist men were picked second with 20 points behind the Captains' 25. Head coach Tim Ryerson will open his second season at the helm on Saturday in a 5K race on the Methodist University campus. The Monarchs return four letterwinners including two-time USA South Runner of the Year Husein Nasiro-Sigo. The women received 53 points in the voting to rank fourth in the poll. Senior All-Conference runner Krystal Patton leads the team amongst three returners and three newcomers. N.C. Wesleyan is the favorite to take the men's soccer conference championship this fall. The Bishops received four first place votes on the way to earning 33 points. The Monarchs have been picked fourth behind Christopher Newport and Greensboro. Head coach Justin Terranova has a wealth of players prepared to start the season Sept. 1 at the N.C. Wesleyan Fall Classic. Christopher Newport was voted number one in the women's soccer preseason poll, six points ahead of the defending conference champion Monarchs. Tony Tommasi's team received two first place votes and 73 points in the poll. The Monarchs open the season at home on Sept. 1 against Hood College. Rounding out the fall preseason polls is Christopher Newport atop the volleyball standings. The Captains shared the regular season championship last season with Averett who was picked second. The Monarchs were selected fifth with 47 points behind Greensboro and Ferrum. Head coach Eddie Matthews welcomed three new players last week and looks for junior Sara Yeatman to lead the team to increased success this year.
