Program History

Methodist University began its tradition of excellence in 1962 with its first cheerleading team. In 1978, the team introduced co-ed cheerleading to Methodist University, and in 1979 Methodist University organized its first dance team. In 1988, under the direction of Coach Gwen Sykes Holtsclaw, the Methodist University cheerleaders made their first appearance in national competition and received fourth place.

Since 1988, Methodist University has established a reputation as one of the top small collegiate cheerleading programs in the country. Competing at the Division II level, Methodist is the smallest school ever to break into the top three in national competition.

The Methodist University dance team is in its sixth season as a competitive team. In the past, the dance team has finished as high as eighth place in the open division national championship. The Methodist University cheerleaders and the dance team have been seen on national networks such as ESPN, ESPN2, and USA.
