January 16, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The USA South Conference office has released the preseason polls for baseball. The polls are based on votes from each conference member's head coach without voting for themselves. Christopher Newport led the conference with 31 points including three first place votes while N.C. Wesleyan was picked second with 28 points and one first place vote. The Methodist baseball team was just behind with 27 points and two first place votes. Head coach Tom Austin enters his 29th season at the helm chasing another USA South Conference Championship. Last season the Monarchs finished 30-15 overall and 7-5 in the conference, good enough to tie for the regular season title and eventually earned an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. The Monarchs return six field starters and seven pitchers this season. With practice beginning next week, Austin will look to merge a strong class of returners along with a top group of newcomers anticipating opening day Feb. 9 versus Randolph-Macon. Wrapping up the USA South preseason poll, Averett University was picked fourth receiving the final first place vote, while defending tournament champion Ferrum was picked fifth, Shenandoah sixth and Greensboro seventh.
