Monarchs Fall 7-4 After Rain Delay

Senior Scott Russell hit 2-for-3 with a RBI

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Monarchs held a 3-0 lead after six innings before a 52 minute rain delay, but the Alderson-Broaddus Battlers came back to win 7-4 at Armstrong-Shelley Field. The Monarchs move to 10-6 this season while Alderson-Broaddus is 5-2 overall.

Methodist took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Billy Quinn reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on junior Brad Davis' bunt single to third. Senior Michael Carter singled to center to score Quinn for the 1-0 lead.

Davis led off the fourth with a double down the left field line. Carter followed up with a single through the right side for Davis to reach third. Sophomore Brian Halpin hit a ground rule double to center for Davis to score. With runners on second and third, senior Scott Russell hit the sacrifice fly for Carter to give the Monarchs a 3-0 lead. At the end of the sixth inning both teams helped pull the tarp out for a 52 minute rain delay. Play resumed with the Battlers sneaking a run through in the top of the seventh on a ground out to the pitcher.

In the top of the eighth, Alderson-Broaddus tied the game on a two-run double to right center. Ronnie Whitt followed up with a two-run home run to right field to give the Battlers a 5-3 lead. The Monarchs had runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning, but came up empty. Alderson-Broaddus scored two more runs in the ninth on three hits. Halpin led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to right center and Russell walked. Sophomore Seth Kivett was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Junior Kenly Locklear grounded out to the first baseman, but Halpin was able to score on the play. The Battlers recorded the final two outs for the 7-4 win.

Junior Elliott Bisplinghoff pitched the first six innings for the Monarchs giving up just three hits and no runs. Tre' Britt drew the loss in relief while Jacob Evans and Jason Ridenhour also spent time on the mound. Alan Nevells earned the win for Alderson-Broaddus pitching two innings of relief.

The Monarchs will host Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday at 4 pm.
