Monarchs Win 14-13 in 11th Inning
Senior Jonathan Spivey scores game-winning run

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Alderson-Broaddus Battlers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Monarchs came back to take the lead.  Methodist held a 13-9 lead going into the ninth when Alderson tied it to send the game into extra innings.  The Monarchs took the 14-13 win in the eleventh inning.  Methodist improves to 8-4 overall while Alderson-Broaddus moves to 4-1 this season.

The Monarchs got on the board in the fourth inning when senior Mike Ellsworth started things off with a single through the left side.  The Monarchs capitalized on Alderson-Broaddus errors to score three runs on three hits.  In the fifth inning, Ellsworth hit another single followed up by a single by junior Scott Russell to advance Ellsworth to third.  Sophomore Dustin Proctor walked to load the bases and junior Michael Carter's single to left field scored Ellsworth and Russell and give the Monarchs the 5-4 lead.

In the sixth inning both teams scored three runs a piece for the Monarchs to hold an 8-7 lead entering the seventh inning.  Freshman Seth Kivett took the mound and held the Battlers scoreless while the Monarchs rattled off four runs in the bottom of the inning on four hits.  In the eighth inning Alderson-Broaddus scored two to close the lead to 12-9, but a single by senior Jonathan Spivey scored Carter.  With the 13-9 lead going into the ninth, the Monarchs just needed three outs, but Alderson-Broaddus scored four runs to tie the game.  The Monarchs couldn't score in the bottom of the inning, sending the game into extra innings.

Both teams were held scoreless in the tenth inning.  The Monarchs had another opportunity to score in the eleventh inning when senior Matt Hunt led off with a walk.  Spivey reached on an error and moved over to second to advance Hunt to third.  The Battlers walked junior Kyle Eudy to fill the bases and pitcher Robert Kisiah stepped into hit playing into a fielder's choice with Hunt being called out at home.  Russell hit one back to the pitcher, but the throw was off allowing Spivey to score the game-winning run.

Kisiah earned the win in two innings of work.  Ellsworth finished 3-for-4 from the plate while Spivey and Carter had three RBI a piece.

Methodist will host Emory & Henry in a doubleheader on Thursday at 3 pm.
