Methodist Battles Back to Defeat Averett 6-5
Junior Scott Russell scores the game-winning run after leading off with a single in the eighth

FAYETTEVILLE, NC— The Monarchs trailed by two going into the bottom of the first inning, but tied the game in the bottom of the inning.  They took a 3-2 lead in the fourth before the Cougars went ahead 5-3 in the fifth.  The Monarchs tied the game in the seventh and scored the game-winning run in the eighth to prevail 6-5.  Methodist improves to 21-8 overall and 6-4 in the USA South Conference while Averett moves to 29-9 overall and 4-5 in the conference.

Averett scored both of their runs in the first inning on three hits with two outs.  Freshman Seth Kivett laid down a bunt single to load the bases along with senior Matt Hunt and junior Michael Carter.  Sophomore Billy Quinn had a flew out to right field to score Hunt while Carter scored on an error by the pitcher.  Methodist took the lead in the fourth on an unearned run by senior Steve Cornelius.  The Cougars responded with three runs in the top of the fifth on three hits including two doubles.

The Monarchs tied the game in the seventh inning with two unearned runs after singles by Hunt and Carter early in the inning.  Junior pitcher Chris Toth held Averett scoreless in the top of the eighth allowing Methodist to take the lead in the bottom of the inning.  Junior Scott Russell led off with an infield single to second base.  Sophomore Brad Davis laid down the sacrifice bunt to move Russell to second while freshman Brian Halpin hit a single to left field to score Russell.  The Cougars looked like they would have a chance to score when Eric Sibrizzi led off with a single, but Toth, Quinn and Russell combined for the pick off and the Monarchs finished up with a strikeout and a fly out to center to hold on for the win.

Toth pitched the complete game for the Monarchs to earn his fifth win of the season while Justin Crowl took the loss for Averett.

Methodist will play at Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday at 3 pm.
