Averett Defeats Methodist 5-2

Sophomore Brian Halpin draws RBI walk to tie the game at two

DANVILLE, VA - The Monarchs scored first and tied the game at two in the fifth inning but Averett took the 5-2 win. Methodist moves to 22-11-1 overall and 6-5 in the USA South while Averett is 14-19 overall and 2-9 in the conference.

Junior Mike Twichell led off the top of the first inning with a walk and senior Scott Russell sacrificed him to second on the bunt. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on sophomore Seth Kivett's groundout. The Cougars came back and scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning after two hits and a walk. Junior Billy Quinn got things going for Methodist in the fifth when he reached on an error. Senior Michael Carter singled to left to move Quinn to second and both runners advanced on junior Dustin Proctor's walk to load the bases. Sophomore Brian Halpin drew the walk for Quinn to tie the game at two.

Sophomore pitcher Fred Geisinger entered in the bottom of the sixth for junior Elliott Bisplinghoff and got the Monarchs out of a jam, but Averett came back with the eventual game-winning run in the seventh on a RBI single to left field after a lead off single. They added two insurance runs in the eighth on a two-run home run from Tyler Grogan.

Bisplinghoff scattered six hits with seven strikeouts while Geisinger took the loss giving up four hits with a strikeout. Ben Hildreth picked up his fifth win of the season for Averett.

Both teams will face each other again on Sunday at 1 pm.
