April 13, 2008 DANVILLE, VA - The Monarchs used a seven run second inning to cruise to the 14-2 win at Averett on Sunday. The win secured Methodist the fourth seed in the USA South Tournament. Methodist moves to 23-11-1 overall and 7-5 in the USA South while Averett is 14-20 overall and 2-10 in the conference. Junior Mike Twichell started the game off with a single but was left stranded on second in the first inning, but the Monarchs poured seven runs on in the second inning. Senior Kyle Eudy led off with the walk and senior Michael Carter singled through the left side to move Eudy to second. Junior Brad Davis loaded the bases with a bunt single and a walk from freshman Brian Inghram allowed Eudy to score. Freshman Tripp Lancaster doubled to right field for Carter and Davis to score. Twichell reached on a fielder's choice that scored Inghram and Russell reached on a fielder's choice, but Lancaster was called out at home. Sophomore Seth Kivett followed up with a three-run home run to clear the bases. The Monarchs added four runs in the fourth after a two-run home run from Kivett along with RBI singles from Carter and Davis. Averett tallied a run in the fifth on three hits but awild pitch allowed Carter to score in the sixth to give Methodist the 12-1 lead. The Cougars' Justin Brown homered in the seventh, but the Monarchs came back with two runs in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Inghram and a RBI single from Russell to finish with the 14-2 win. Senior Chris Toth went six innings giving up just three hits for one earned run with five strikeouts while sophomores Josh Andrade and Alex Sholar each pitched an inning in relief. Kivett finished with five RBI for the Monarchs in a 3-for-5 day at the plate while Carter and Davis both went 4-for-5. The Monarchs will travel to Lynchburg on Monday at 3 pm and then face fifth seeded Shenandoah on Thursday at 9:30 am in Burlington, NC for the first game of the USA South Tournament. |
