Monarchs Come From Behind to Win 6-5 Over Bridgewater

Junior Philip Betterly hit 2-for-4 with a home run

BRIDGEWATER, VA- Methodist scored the first run of the game, but Bridgewater took a 5-2 lead before the Monarchs tied the game in the sixth and scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning. The Monarchs move to 14-6 overall while Bridgewater is 7-4-1 this season.

Sophomore Brian Halpin drew the walk to lead off the game and moved to second on a passed ball. Senior Scott Russell grounded out but allowed Halpin to move to third. Sophomore Seth Kivett singled to right field to allow Halpin to score. The Eagles scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first while the Monarchs came up empty in the second. Bridgewater scored their second run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly but junior Philip Betterly tied the game at two in the top of the third on a home run.

Bridgewater was able to get three runs in the bottom of the inning on three hits and a Methodist error for the 5-2 lead. Methodist cut the lead to two in the fourth on an unearned run in the fourth. With two outs, junior Brad Davis singled and was able to score on junior Dustin Proctor's single after a throwing error from the Eagles. The fifth went scoreless, but senior Kyle Eudy reached on a walk in the sixth inning. Proctor singled moving Eudy to second. Eudy and Proctor both scored on a single from senior Michael Carter to tie the game at five. Eudy singled in the top of the eighth and freshman Tripp Lancaster came on to pinch run. Davis singled for Lancaster to reach third. Proctor laid down the bunt single for Lancaster to score the eventual game-winning run.

Junior Elliott Bisplinghoff went two and two thirds innings on the mound for the Monarchs while senior Robert Kisiah picked up the win in relief giving up just four hits with four strikeouts. Proctor finished 3-for-4 from the plate with the game-winning RBI while Davis and Betterly had two hits a piece.

The Monarchs will return home to host Hampden-Sydney Wednesday at 3 pm.
