Monarchs Prevail in 21-14 Win Over Bridgewater
Mike Ellsworth finishes 5-for-5 with five RBI and four runs scored

FERRUM, VA -  The Monarchs started scoring early and kept up their offense to prevail over Bridgewater in the first game of the NCAA Baseball Regional on Wednesday.  It looked more like a football score, but the bats were connecting as Methodist tallied 14 hits to go along with Bridgewater's six errors to score a season-high 21 runs.

Methodist pitcher Chris Toth allowed just one hit in the top of the first to hold the Eagles scoreless, while the Monarchs broke out with four runs on two hits and two errors for the early 4-0 lead.  Bridgewater came back and scored three runs in the second and five in the third to take an 8-4 lead.

The Monarchs cut the lead to two with two runs in the bottom of the third before taking a 9-8 lead in the fourth on a RBI groundout by Kyle Eudy.  Bridgewater tied the game back at nine in the top of the fifth, but the Monarchs scored four in the bottom of the inning and another five in the sixth to take an 18-9 lead.

The Eagles scored a run in the seventh and tried to make a comeback with four runs in the eighth including two home runs, but the Monarchs closed out with three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to win 21-14.

Designated hitter Mike Ellsworth led the Monarchs with a 5-for-5 outing from the plate along with five RBI and four runs scored.  Brad Davis added five RBI while Matt Hunt had four RBI and five runs scored.

AJ Vedrani earned his third win of the season with four and two thirds innings of relief while Fred Geisinger finished the final two innings on the mound.

The Monarchs will face Emory on Thursday at 7:45 pm.
