March 1, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs scored first but Capital took over with a 4-2 lead going into the eighth inning. The Monarchs came back to score three in the final two innings to earn the 5-4 win. Methodist moves to 6-3 overall, while Capital starts the season 0-1. In the bottom of the first senior Matt Hunt reached first with a walk and senior Jonathan Spivey's sacrifice bunt advanced Hunt to second before he moved around to third on the throw to first. With senior Mike Ellsworth's ground out, Hunt scored to give the Monarchs 1-0 lead. Capital tied the game in the top of the third and took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth the Monarchs moved within one on a single by junior Scott Russell to score pinch runner Andy Redman. The Crusaders took a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh, but the Monarchs responded in the eighth. With one out and freshman Seth Kivett on second and freshman Brian Halpin on first, Spivey hit a fly ball to left field to score Kivett for the Monarchs' third run. Freshman pitcher Fred Geisinger entered at the top of the ninth and held the Crusaders scoreless to give the Monarchs a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Billy Quinn led off with a single and junior Michael Carter came on to pinch run. Russell was hit by a pitch to reach first and move Carter to second. The Crusaders' second baseman started to run in on sophomore Dustin Proctor when Proctor lined one through the right side for a single. Russell advanced to third and Carter scored the tying run. Capital walked sophomore Brad Davis to load the bases when Kivett came up to bat. A wild pitch allowed Russell to score the game-winning run. Ellsworth, Quinn and Russell all finished 2-for-3 from the plate in the win. The Monarchs will host NC Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 pm. |
