March 24, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs handed the Captains just their second conference loss Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory. The Monarchs scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning while sophomore pitcher Kurt Kelly went nine innings to hold onto the lead. Methodist moves to 17-7 overall and 4-3 in the USA South while Christopher Newport is 17-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference. Senior Matt Hunt singled up the middle to lead off the fourth inning for the Monarchs' first hit of the game. Hunt stole second and freshman Seth Kivett moved Hunt to third on a single to right field. Senior Mike Ellsworth laid down the bunt for Hunt to score on an error by the Captains' catcher. Sophomore Billy Quinn hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Kivett and Ellsworth and Kivett scored the second run on a passed ball. The Captains scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on two hits, but the Monarchs held on for the 2-1 win. The Monarchs will play game two of the series at Christopher Newport on Sunday at 1 pm. |
