Win Over Christopher Newport Lifts Monarchs Into Three-Way Tie for First
Junior Scott Russell went 3-for-5 from the plate with a RBI single in the third

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Methodist took a 4-1 win over Christopher Newport on Sunday to sweep the series over the Captains.  With the win, the Monarchs launched into a three-way tie for first place in the USA South with Christopher Newport and Ferrum.  Methodist improves to 18-7 overall and 5-3 in the USA South while Christopher Newport is 17-8 overall and 5-3 in the conference.

Senior Jonathan Spivey led off the game with a hit and the Monarchs had two hits in the second inning, but it wasn't until the top of the third inning when the team put together three hits combined with a walk, hit by pitch and a defensive error to score three runs.  The Captains responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, but were held scoreless through the remaining six innings.  Methodist cushioned their lead in the sixth inning when freshman Brian Halpin scored after leading off the inning with a single.

Junior pitcher Chris Toth started on the mound and went eight innings to earn the win for Methodist while freshman Fred Geisinger closed the game in the ninth for the save.  Junior Scott Russell went 3-for-5 from the plate including a RBI single in the third inning to score freshman Seth Kivett.  Senior Mike Ellsworth also recorded a RBI batting 2-for-3 on the day. 

The Monarchs will host Guilford on Tuesday at 7 pm.
