Methodist Splits With 11th Ranked Christopher Newport

Senior Scott Russell drives in the game-winning run in game two

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Methodist fell behind early in game one as the Captains went on to take the 5-2 win, but the Monarchs rebounded with a 5-3 victory in game two of the doubleheader. Methodist moves to 21-10-1 overall and 6-4 in the USA South while Christopher Newport is 20-7 overall and 7-2 in the conference.

Christopher Newport opened the scoring in the third inning with three runs on four hits capped off by a two RBI double by Trae Bailey, but the Monarchs got out of the inning with a pickoff and fly out. The Captains added a run in the fifth after a bases loaded walk to lead by four. Methodist cut into the lead in the sixth when senior Scott Russell hit a double down the left field line. Sophomore Seth Kivett followed up with a double to the same place to score Russell and junior Kenly Locklear came right back with a double to left center to score Kivett. Christopher Newport took the 5-2 lead in the seventh on a RBI single through the left side and the Monarchs came up hitless through the final three innings for the captains to take the 5-2 win. Sophomore Fred Geisinger drew the loss in four and a third inning pitched while sophomores Josh Andrade and Landon Jordan entered in relief.

Methodist scored first in game two with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Locklear led off with a double and senior Michael Carter sacrificed him to third. Locklear was able to score on a wild pitch before Christopher Newport gave up three consecutive walks to load the bases. Freshman Tripp Lancaster grounded out but allowed junior Brad Davis to score for the 2-0 lead. The Captains tallied a run in the fifth after two singles and a walk and took the 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run by Bailey. Lancaster sparked a rally for the Monarchs with a single up the middle in the bottom of the inning. Lancaster advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt and pinch hitter, junior Mike Twichell singled to left for Lancaster to tie the game at three. Twichell stole second and Russell hit the single to score Twichell and advanced to third on an error. Methodist added an insurance run on Kivett's single down the left field line to score Russell. The Monarchs finished out with the 5-3 win with senior Chris Toth earning the win on the mound in seven innings pitched. Senior Robert Kisiah picked up his fourth save of the season.

Methodist will host Guilford on Thursday at 6 pm.
