March 30, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Emory came back from a six run deficit to take the lead in the sixth. The Monarchs regained the lead, but Emory tied the game in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. The teams managed a scoreless tenth inning before the umpires called the game due to poor field conditions as the result of steady rain. Methodist moves to 19-9-1 overall while 14th ranked Emory is 18-6-1 this season. The Monarchs jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning when junior Kenly Locklear led off with a single to center. Junior Brad Davis got on with a bunt single and junior Dustin Proctor sacrificed both runners. Junior Billy Quinn doubled down the left field line for both runners to score. Senior Michael Carter singled through the left side for Quinn to advance and junior Philip Betterly drew the walk to load the bases. Freshman Brian Inghram reached on a throwing error that allowed Carter and Quinn to score. Senior Scott Russell loaded the bases again with a hit by pitch and sophomore Seth Kivett's walk allowed Betterly to score. The Monarchs added a run in the fourth after singles from Betterly and Inghram. Betterly scored on Russell's groundout. Emory made a dent in the lead with two runs in the fifth before taking the 7-6 lead in the sixth with five runs, four of them unearned. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Inghram reached on a walk and Russell was hit by a pitch. Kivett hit a double down the left field line for both runners to score and allow Methodist to regain the lead. The Eagles scored the tying run in the top of the eighth after a lead off triple from Steve Bralver deep to right center. Michael Saleh drew the walk and pinch hitter Matthew McDonough singled through the right side for Bralver to score. The Monarchs picked up two walks in the bottom of the ninth, but Emory recorded the final out to send the game to extra innings. Both teams had bases loaded in the tenth inning, but could not score leaving the game tied 8-8 after ten. The umpires met and ruled the field was unplayable and called the game with the tie. Senior Chris Toth went five and a third innings while Josh Andrade, Robert Kisiah and Landon Jordan all pitched in relief. Methodist will play at Hampden-Sydney Thursday at 3 pm. |
