May 17, 2007 FERRUM, VA - The Monarchs were down early and came back to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Emory responded with 8 unanswered runs to win 10-3 dealing Methodist their first loss of the tournament. The Monarchs move to 30-14 on the season. Emory took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on two leadoff doubles and a sacrifice fly. The Monarchs settled in and came back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Jonathan Spivey was walked to lead off and Matt Hunt put down the bunt single to move Spivey to second. Seth Kivett sacrificed both runners setting up the RBI groundout for Mike Ellsworth as Spivey scored the first Methodist run. The Monarchs tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on three hits and a defensive error for the Eagles. Dustin Proctor and Jonathan Spivey led off with singles advancing to second and third on the throw. Kivett singled to left field to score Proctor to tie the game at two. Methodist took a brief 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Spivey hit a double to center and moved to third on a passed ball. Hunt's groundout to third scored Spivey for the go-ahead run, but Emory came back in the top of the sixth to capitalize on Methodist errors and take a 4-3 lead. Emory went on to score five runs in the top of the seventh to secure a 9-3 lead. The Monarchs left runners stranded on second and third in the bottom of the seventh and couldn't get another runner on in the eighth or ninth innings. The Eagles put a cap on the scoring with their tenth run in the top of the ninth on two more doubles. Spivey finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored while Brad Davis went 2-for-4. Salisbury and York play Friday at 10 am while the Monarchs will face the winner in an elimination game scheduled for 4:30 pm. |
