March 8, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarch baseball team put two away early with 7-1 and 12-1 wins over Emory & Henry on Thursday. Methodist finished with 18 hits on the day while giving up eight to the Wasps. Methodist improves to 10-4 overall while Emory & Henry falls to 2-9 this season. Sophomore Elliott Bisplinghoff pitched the complete game for the Monarchs in game one only allowing three hits in seven innings. After a scoreless first inning, the Monarchs pounced on the Wasps with three runs. Sophomore Dustin Proctor doubled down the left field line. Junior Michael Carter's single advanced Proctor to third before freshman Brian Halpin hit a bunt single down the first base line to score Proctor. A sacrifice fly by senior Jonathan Spivey scored Carter to open up the opportunity for Halpin to steal home for the third run of the inning. The Monarchs had another big inning in the bottom of the fifth capped off by a two-run home run by freshman Seth Kivett to left center. The long ball marked the first collegiate home run for Kivett and the first home run of the season for the Monarchs. The Wasps prevented a shutout with one run in the seventh. Senior Matt Hunt, senior Mike Ellsworth and Halpin finished 2-for-3 from the plate while Ellsworth and Kivett both had two RBI. In game two, the Methodist scored 12 runs on eight hits. Freshman Landon Jordan started on the mound and went six innings to earn the win for the Monarchs. The offense started early for Methodist when they loaded the bases with the first three batters for Ellsworth to hit a grounder to score Hunt. Junior Scott Russell singled up the middle to score sophomore Billy Quinn and Spivey. Methodist scored three more in the second when the first two batters were hit by pitches and Spivey and Quinn each had a RBI before Spivey would score on a balk. The Monarchs scored two runs in each of the next three innings. Quinn and Spivey led the pack each drilling a triple to deep centerfield. Methodist also logged four sacrifice flies over during the three innings for three RBI. Spivey and sophomore Brad Davis went 2-for-3 from the plate. Russell finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBI while sophomore catcher Philip Betterly had 2 RBI on sacrifice flies. The Monarchs return to conference action this weekend as they host Greensboro College on Saturday at 5 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. |
