Looking
to
rebound
from
Wednesday’s
loss,
the
Methodist
Monarch
baseball
team
cruised
to a
10-3
victory
over
visiting
Endicott
College
at
Shelley
Field on
Thursday.
The
victory
helps to
Monarchs
improve
to
12-11.
Alex
Sholar
(Rocky
Point,
NC)
recorded
his
first
collegiate
win in
his
first
career
start
for the
Monarchs.
The
Freshman
threw
five
innings
giving
up two
earned
runs and
striking
out
five.
The
visiting
Gulls
scored
first on
an RBI
ground
out by
Gavin
Softic
in the
top of
the
first.
The
Monarchs
responded
with a
Steve
Cornelius
two-run
double
in the
bottom
of the
inning
and
never
looked
back.
The
Monarchs
added
eight
more
runs
over the
next
seven
innings
taking
advantage
of four
Endicott
errors
and
pounding
out 13
hits.
Jonathan
Spivey
was a
perfect
leadoff
hitter
getting
on base
and
scoring
each of
his five
trips to
the
plate.
Spivey-
who
actually
led off
in the
first,
sixth,
and
eighth-
finished
3-for-3
with two
walks,
five
runs,
and an
RBI.
Teammate
Steve
Cornelius
was just
as
productive
also
going
3-for-3
with a
walk and
six RBI.
Casey
Varnell
looked
good in
relief
striking
out the
side in
both the
sixth
and
seventh
innings
before
giving
way to
Robert
Kisiah
and
Chase
Cates.
Matt
Bishop
led the
Gulls at
the
plate
going
3-for-4
with a
home
run.
Kyle
Schmutte
took the
loss for
Endicott
(0-5).
Methodist
plays
host to
Christopher
Newport
on
Saturday,
with the
doubleheader
set to
begin at
12 p.m.
at
Shelley
Field.
