March 20, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs' offense started clicking early but stalled late when the Endicott Gulls scored three runs in the eighth inning to win 6-5. Methodist moves to 14-7 overall while Endicott improves to 2-1 this season. Senior Matt Hunt got things started for the Monarchs in the bottom of the first inning with a single to centerfield before senior Jonathan Spivey's walk advanced Hunt to second. Senior Mike Ellsworth laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Hunt stole home mid-pitch and Spivey was able to follow Hunt home on the wild pitch. Junior Kyle Eudy made it to first on an error before freshman Seth Kivett's single advanced Eudy to second. Junior Scott Russell sacrificed a bunt to advance the runners and a single by sophomore Brad Davis scored Eudy for a 3-0 lead. Freshman pitcher Trey Hill held the Gulls scoreless through the first three before Endicott connected three hits for a run in the fourth. The Gulls tied the game at three at the top of the seventh, but the Monarchs came back to take a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Spivey hit a double deep in centerfield to score Hunt who was on first with a walk. Ellsworth grounded out to first baseman Ryan Scanlon, but advanced Spivey to third. Spivey scored on another wild pitch for the fifth run of the game. The Gulls only had two hits in the eighth inning but managed to score three runs to take the 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth with three walks and two wild pitches. The Monarchs had opportunities to score in both the eighth and ninth innings but left Davis stranded on third in the eighth and had bases loaded in the ninth but came up empty. Dave Weinreich earned the win for the Gulls pitching three innings of relief while Adam Labbe held on for the save. The Monarchs will host Tufts at 4 pm on Wednesday and Lawrence at 7 pm on Thursday. |
