Armstrong-Shelley Field
Dedicated
on April 20, 1974, Armstrong-Shelley Field is the home of Monarch baseball.
It is the namesake of George and Carolyn Armstrong and Bruce Shelley.
The Armstrong's donated the money for the lights which were added in
2006 and received the Honorary Monarch Award for their generosity.
Shelley was the Monarchs' first coach and is now in the Methodist Athletic
Hall of Fame. In 1969, Shelley founded the Monarch baseball program
and is now considered the "Father of Methodist Baseball."
Surrounded by pine trees, Armstrong-Shelley Field offers players a beautiful
backdrop. With a playing surface that includes a Bermuda turf infield,
few parks can rival Armstrong-Shelley Field. The dimensions are 320
down the lines, 365 in the alleys, and 400 to centerfield. The
facility includes spacious dugouts, three carpeted batting cages, an
air-conditioned press box, concession stand, public restrooms, seating
capacity for 700, and a practice infield beyond the right field fence.
Recent additions to Armstrong-Shelley Field include the new lights,
a state-of-the-art inning-by-inning scoreboard, new protective railings
in front of both dugouts and new carpet in the batting cages. Mrs. Rubelle
Harper Shelley recently donated flags and poles in memory of her late
husband, former coach, Bruce Shelley.
