Methodist Splits Doubleheader with Ferrum
Junior Chris Toth earns second win of the season

FERRUM, VA- After losing the first game 11-0, the Monarchs came back and defeated the Panthers 9-2 in game two.  The games originally scheduled to be played in a Saturday-Sunday series were both played on Saturday to avoid impending weather on Sunday.  Methodist moves to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the USA South, while Ferrum moves to 3-4 this season and 1-1 in the conference.

The Monarchs had four hits in game one, but struggled to score leaving seven on base.  Ferrum held a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning when they rattled off seven hits on top of four walks and an error by the Monarchs to score nine runs.  The Monarchs tried to get a two out rally going in the eighth when sophomore Drew Dull pinch hit and singled to third base.  Junior Blake Newsome entered for Dull as a pinch runner and senior Matt Hunt's walk advanced Newsome to second.  Sophomore Brad Davis laid down a bunt  to advance both Hunt and Newsome, but both runners were left on base when senior Jonathan Spivey struck out.  The Panthers went on to win 11-0.

Sophomore Kurt Kelly pitched five and a third innings to get the loss while freshman Fred Geisinger, freshman Trey Hill, sophomore Kevin Branch and freshman AJ Vedrani helped to finish out the game.

During game two, Ferrum scored first again, the but the Monarchs came back in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.  Junior Kyle Eudy reached first on an error and junior Scott Russell's bunt advanced Eudy to second.  Sophomore Dustin Proctor singled to left field moving Eudy over to third.  Davis' single scored Eudy and sent Proctor to second.  Seth Kivett reached on a fielder's choice while Davis moved to second, and Proctor scored on an error by the pitcher.  Newsome also reached first on a fielder's choice that scored Davis.  Spivey's single late in the inning would score Kivett for the Monarchs' fourth run.

Eudy led off the third inning with a double and advanced to third on Russell's bunt.  Proctor reached on an error to score Eudy.  In the fourth inning Hunt and Spivey each singled and Hunt scored on a wild pitch to give the Monarchs the 6-1 lead.  The Panthers responded with a run in the fifth, but Methodist capped the game off with three runs in the ninth.  Russell reached first on a fielder's choice to score Spivey and Davis singled to left center to score Russell and pinch runner senior Andy Redman.  The Panthers finished the ninth scoreless to hand the Monarchs their first conference win 9-2.

Junior Chris Toth started on the mound for the Monarchs pitching seven innings with nine strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.  Branch and freshman Landon Jordan both pitched in relief.  Spivey finished game two going 2-for-5 from the plate.

The Monarchs will travel to Bridgewater on Tuesday to face the Eagles at 3 pm.
