February 15, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Methodist baseball team slowly built up speed picking up a run in the first and the second before scoring two in the third and three in the fifth. The team capped things off with two runs in the seventh while allowing just two runs for the 9-2 win. The Monarchs move to 4-1 this season while Frostburg State starts the season 0-1. Senior Michael Carter got things going for Methodist in the bottom of the first inning with a walk. Sophomore Seth Kivett singled down the left field line while Carter's quick base running moved him to third and Kivett was able to advance to second on the throw. Senior Kyle Eudy was out on a grounder to short, but Carter was able to score on the play giving Methodist a 1-0 lead. Frostburg State closed out the inning, but the Monarchs picked up where they left on in the second. Junior Kenly Locklear made it to first on an error and sophomore Brian Halpin hit a bunt single to move Locklear to second. Senior Scott Russell laid down the sacrifice bunt for both runners to advance and freshman Tripp Lancaster's groundout scored Locklear for the two run lead. The Bobcats scored an unearned run in the top of the third to move within one, but Methodist came back and scored two in the bottom of the inning starting with junior Dustin Proctor's triple to deep center field to score Kivett. Locklear had a bunt single and a failed pickoff attempt allowed Proctor to score for the 4-1 advantage. The fourth inning passed quietly, but Methodist started the bottom of the fifth with two walks and went on to score three runs on a sacrifice fly from Proctor, a single from Halpin for two RBI. Methodist added two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh with singles from Locklear, Halpin, and Russell. Frostburg added an unearned run in the top of the eighth, but it was not enough as Methodist finished with the 9-2 win. Senior pitcher Robert Kisiah earned the win in seven innings pitched allowing seven hits and striking out seven. Freshman Tre' Britt pitched the final two innings giving up just one hit. The Methodist University Invitational continues on Saturday with games at 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm. Methodist plays Lynchburg next at 1 pm. |
