March 10, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Greensboro took an early one run lead on two hits to start the game, but the Monarchs responded in the third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead. The Pride scored a run in the sixth and tied the game at three in the top of the eighth before the Monarchs scored the eventual game-winner in the bottom of the inning. Methodist improves to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in the USA South while Greensboro stands at 10-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference. The Pride jumped on starting pitcher Kurt Kelly, but Kelly settled in to strike out eight in seven innings pitched. Methodist took the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore Brad Davis led off with a double to left centerfield. Senior Matt Hunt's ground out advanced Davis to third before senior Jonathan Spivey reached on an error to score Davis. Sophomore Billy Quin drove a single to the outfield to score Spivey for the second run. The Monarchs' bats continued connecting in the fourth when freshman Seth Kivett led off with a double to the fence in centerfield. Sophomore Dustin Proctor singled through the left side to move Kivett to third and Davis' fly out to center would score Kivett to give Methodist a 3-1 lead. The Pride began to creep back in with a run in the sixth and tied the game in the eighth on two hits. Junior Scott Russell led off the bottom of the eighth and was hit by a pitch to reach first. Kivett singled to advance Russell to second and Proctor's single loaded the bases. Freshman Brian Halpin took two strikes early but battled in the box to hit a single up the middle to score Russell for the 4-3 lead. It would be the only run the Monarchs needed as the Pride had runners on first and third in the top of the ninth but came up empty. Freshman pitcher Fred Geisinger finished on the mound pitching two innings with two strikeouts. Senior Mike Ellsworth and Davis both finished 2-for-3 from the plate on the night. The Monarchs complete the weekend series with Greensboro on Sunday at 2 pm. |
