March 11, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs led early scoring the first two runs of the game, but the Pride took over in the final two thirds of the game to win 11-4. Methodist falls to 11-5 overall and 3-3 in the USA South while Greensboro moves to 11-10 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Junior Chris Toth started out strong pitching a no-hitter through the first three innings of the game. The Monarchs scored first in the bottom of the second inning when freshman Seth Kivett doubled deep in centerfield and sophomore Brad Davis hit a RBI single to left field to score Kivett. Methodist scored again in the third when senior Matt Hunt led off with a single up the middle. Senior Jonathan Spivey laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Hunt to second before Hunt stole third. Junior Kyle Eudy reached on a fielder's choice when Hunt was called safe at home on a bobble by the Pride catcher. The Greensboro bats started connecting in the fourth inning when the top of the order had three straight hits to score leadoff hitter Kyle Bolick. Methodist responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. With bases loaded, freshman Brian Halpin hit a long sacrifice fly to centerfield to allow junior Scott Russell to score and give the Monarchs the 3-1 lead. The Pride took over in the fifth inning to score three runs on four hits. The Monarchs went hitless in the bottom of the inning giving Greensboro an opportunity to expand their lead. In the sixth inning, Greensboro knocked around three more consecutive hits to score two runs and take the 6-3 lead. Freshman pitcher Fred Geisinger held the Pride scoreless in the seventh, but four hits and an error in the eighth proved to be too much as Greensboro scored five runs. In the bottom of the eighth Russell reached first on an infield base hit and Kivett hit a triple down the right field line to score Russell, but Greensboro held on for the 11-4 win. Kivett finished 4-for-4 for the Monarchs while Russell went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. The Monarchs will host Villa Julie College on Tuesday at 4 pm. |
