March 22, 2008 GREENSBORO, NC - The Monarchs scored first and took a 7-1 lead before holding off an eighth inning rally for the 7-4 win. Methodist moves to 18-8 overall and 5-3 in the USA South while Greensboro moves to 18-10 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Sophomore Brian Halpin led off for the Monarchs and reached on an error before advancing to second. Senior Scott Russell's groundout moved Halpin to third. Sophomore Seth Kivett and Junior Kenly Locklear both drew walks before junior Brad Davis hit a sacrifice fly to score Halpin for the 1-0 lead. The Pride countered with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning but Methodist took the lead in the fourth and never relinquished it. Junior Billy Quinn walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Junior Dustin Proctor laid down the sacrifice for Quinn to move to third. Senior Kyle Eudy walked and senior Michael Carter hit the sacrifice fly for Quinn to score for the 2-1 lead. Kivett got on in the fifth with a walk and Locklear's single moved Kivett to second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Kivett scored on a single from Davis. Davis moved to second on a wild pitch and with Locklear on third, both runners scored on a single to center field from Quinn. The Monarchs took a 5-1 lead into the sixth and scored two more runs in the top of the inning. Eudy led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Carter walked and both runners scored on a throwing error from the Greensboro defense that allowed Halpin to reach base. Greensboro picked up three runs in the bottom of the eighth but through the first seven innings, starting pitcher Chris Toth gave up just four hits with an earned run. Senior Robert Kisiah entered in relief and finished the eighth inning for the Monarchs and retired the first three batters in the ninth to finish with the save. The Monarchs finished with just four hits while Halpin, Davis and Quinn each had two RBI. The Monarchs will host St. Andrew's on Monday at 7 pm. |
