The
Methodist
Monarch
baseball
team got
off to
rough
start on
Saturday,
dropping
a
doubleheader
at USA
South
Athletic
Conference
rival
Greensboro
at War
Memorial
Stadium.
The
Pride
took the
first
game
10-6,
and then
rallied
to win
the
nightcap
12-11.
The
defeats
even
Methodist
at 8-8
overall
and 4-4
in the
USA
South,
while
Greensboro
improves
to 10-7
and 4-4.
Game one
was a
match-up
between
two of
the top
pitchers
in the
USA
South –
Methodist’s
Ryan
Brandt
and
AnDrew
Keever
from
Greensboro.
Keever
prevailed,
allowing
three
runs and
six hits
in
seven-and-a-third
innings,
while
Brandt
fell to
2-2,
allowing
five
runs and
six hits
in six
innings
with
four
walks
and
three
strikeouts.
The
Pride
took a
4-0 lead
in the
second
inning
on a
two-run
double
by Brent
Justice
and a
bases-loaded
two-run
single
by Jeff
Gregory.
Greensboro
increased
the lead
to 8-2
with run
in the
sixth on
an RBI
single
by
Gregory
Allen
and
three in
the
seventh
on a
two-run
single
by Allen
and an
RBI
single
by
Bradley
Coats.
Methodist
rallied
with
four
runs in
the
eighth.
Michael
Carter
and
Jason
Hughes
both
scored
on a
Greensboro
error,
while
Kyle
Eudy’s
RBI
double
scored
Andy
Redman.
However,
Greensboro
answered
with two
runs in
the
bottom
of the
eighth.
Eudy
went
2-for-4
for the
Monarchs,
while
Michael
Ellsworth
went
2-for-5.
For
Greensboro,
Allen
went
2-for-3
with
three
RBIs,
while
Gregory
went
2-for-4
and Pat
Burgess
went
2-for-5.
In the
nightcap,
the two
teams
combined
for 23
runs and
33 hits
as
Greensboro
won it
in the
bottom
of the
ninth on
a triple
by
Gregory,
scoring
Justice
from
first
base
against
Monarch
reliever
Chase
Cates.
Methodist
had tied
the game
in the
top of
the
ninth
when
Carter
scored
on a
Pride
error.
Methodist
appeared
to have
game two
in
control
by
scoring
six runs
in the
third to
take a
7-1
lead.
Steve
Cornelius
started
the
rally
with a
three-run
single
by the
aide of
a
Greensboro
error.
Dustin
Proctor
followed
with a
two-run
double,
and
Scott
Russell
finished
the
rally
with an
RBI
single.
Greensboro,
however,
retook
the lead
8-7 with
four
runs in
the
fifth.
Gregory’s
two-run
double
cut the
Methodist
lead to
7-5.
Burgess
followed
with an
RBI
single,
and then
an RBI
double
by Jess
Maloney
tied the
game at
7-7. The
Pride
took an
8-7
lead,
scoring
a run on
a
throwing
error by
Eudy.
Trailing
9-7,
Methodist
tied it
with two
runs in
the
seventh
when
Jonathan
Spivey
and Matt
Hunt
scored
on a
Greensboro
error.
Spivey
went
4-for-5
with
four
runs
scored
for
Methodist,
while
Steve
Cornelius
went
3-for-5
with
five
RBIs and
three
runs
scored.
Hunt
went
2-for-4,
while
Proctor,
Carter
and
Russell
each
went
2-for-5.
Monarch
starter
Adam
Denning
allowed
nine
runs and
11 hits,
although
only
five
were
earned,
while
walking
one and
recording
three
strikeouts.
For
Greensboro,
Gregory
went
4-for-6
with
three
RBIs and
three
runs
scored,
while
Maloney
went
3-for-3
with two
RBIs.
The two
teams
conclude
the
three-game
series
on
Sunday
at 12
p.m. at

Stadium.
