Methodist Takes 8-4 Win Against Hampden-Sydney

Sophomore Brian Halpin hit 3-for-4 with a RBI

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Monarchs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back as they cruised to an 8-4 victory Wednesday afternoon. Methodist moves to 15-6 overall while Hampden-Sydney is 7-13 this season.

In the bottom of the first inning senior Scott Russell and sophomore Seth Kivett reached base on balls. Junior Kenly Locklear picked up the first RBI of the game on a single to score Russell. Junior Brad Davis put down the bunt single for everyone to advance and then Kivett rounded third to score on a throwing error. Locklear moved to third on the play and Davis stole second. Both runners were able to score on junior Billy Quinn's single to right field for the 4-0 lead.

The Tigers came back and scored two runs in the top of the second, but Methodist countered with back-to-back doubles by sophomore Brian Halpin and Russell for Halpin to score for the 5-2 lead. In the fourth inning, Locklear earned another RBI to score Halpin and Halpin hit a RBI single in the fifth for senior Michael Carter to give the Monarchs a 7-2 lead. The Monarchs added an insurance run in the seventh after Davis was walked. He stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before freshman Tripp Lancaster singled to center field for Davis to score. Hampden-Sydney scored two runs in the top of the ninth after a Methodist error, but the Monarchs sealed the 8-4 win.

Sophomore Landon Jordan earned his second win on the mound this season in seven innings pitched allowing just two runs. Sophomores Josh Andrade and Alex Sholar pitched an inning a piece in relief. Halpin led the team from the plate with a 3-for-4 performance while Locklear and Quinn each tallied two RBI.

The Monarchs will travel to N.C. Wesleyan this weekend for a game Saturday at 1 pm and Sunday at 2 pm.
