Monarchs Defeat Hampden-Sydney 9-6 
Matt Hunt hits 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a RBI

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA -  While the conference tournaments concluded on Sunday, the Monarchs took on Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday afternoon.  The Tigers held a 5-4 lead after the first four innings, but the Methodist came back to win 9-6.  The Monarchs move to 26-10 on the season while Hampden-Sydney stands at 18-16.

The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Matt Hunt scored while Mike Ellsworth was caught stealing.  The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a defensive error by the Monarchs. In the top of the second, Methodist scored three runs on two hits and two walks.  Brad Davis laid down a sacrifice bunt and Brian Halpin hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the inning.  Dustin Proctor doubled to score Scott Russell and Jonathan Spivey singled to score Proctor.  Hampden-Sydney came back with a run in the bottom of the inning, but Methodist held on to a 4-2 lead.

The Tigers rattled off four hits in the fourth to score three runs and take a 5-4 lead.  Kyle Eudy hit a RBI single to score Hunt for the game-tying run in the fifth.  In the sixth inning, the Monarchs loaded the bases after three consecutive walks and Proctor took a 6-5 lead on a wild pitch, but the Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on an unearned run.

Methodist took an 8-6 lead in the eighth inning with two runs without a hit.  The walks continued as four runners reached first on walks in the inning.  Hunt was walked in while Seth Kivett scored on a wild pitch.  Relief pitcher Fred Geisinger retired the first three batters in the bottom of the eighth as the Monarchs went on to score an insurance run in the ninth on a RBI bunt single by Hunt. 

Kurt Kelly pitched the first six innings while Geisinger earned the win in three innings of relief.

The Monarchs will host Huntingdon on Friday at 4 pm.
