Methodist Bounces Back With 13-8 Win Over Huntingdon

Sophomore Brian Halpin hit 3-for-6 with 3 RBI

MONTGOMERY, AL - Methodist bounced back from a loss to LaGrange with a 13-8 win over Huntingdon. The Monarchs were scheduled to play the Hawks on Friday but were postponed due to weather concerns. With the win, Methodist moves to 7-3 this season while Huntingdon stands at 1-7 overall.

The Monarchs started things off with three runs in the top of the first inning on a RBI single from junior Kenly Locklear. The Hawks moved within one on a run in each of the second and third innings, but Methodist responded with two additional runs in the fourth. Junior Brad Davis led off with a single to right field and freshman Tripp Lancaster’s sacrifice bunt moved Davis to second. Senior Scott Russell hit a single up the middle to score Davis and Russell advanced to second on the throw home. Russell stole third and then scored on senior Michael Carter’s single to shortstop for the 5-2 lead.

Methodist added a run in the top of the fifth singles from senior Kyle Eudy and Locklear. Eudy scored on a fielder’s choice from Lancaster. Huntingdon came right back and rattled off six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-6 lead. The Monarchs responded with three runs in the top of the sixth on a single from Carter. Methodist took advantage of a Hawks error and four walks to hold a 9-8 advantage.

Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the ninth went the Monarchs added four insurance runs on a bunt single from Russell and a 3-run home run from sophomore Brian Halpin. A double from Locklear scored sophomore Seth Kivett who reached on a hit by pitch. The Monarchs closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth with sophomore Alex Sholar retiring the side on a line out, strikeout and groundout.

Sophomore Josh Andrade earned the win in two innings pitched. Halpin and Locklear both finished 3-for-6 from the plate.

The Monarchs will face LaGrange on Sunday at 1 pm.
