April 20, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Monarchs continued their winning ways on Friday afternoon with a 10-2 win over the Huntingdon Hawks. The Monarchs move to 27-10 on the season while Huntingdon drops to 23-13 for the year. The Monarchs connected on five hits through the first four innings but left six runners stranded. The Hawks scored first in the top of the fourth inning when Taylor Files led off with a single. Tyler Pruitt hit the sacrifice fly to score Pruitt for the lead. Leadoff batter Chad Anderson started the fifth with a homerun just clearing the fence in left field for the 2-0 lead. Methodist broke out in the bottom of the fifth when Matt Hunt was hit by a pitch to lead off. Jonathan Spivey singled to right field and was called out at second, but Hunt moved to third on the play. Seth Kivett singled through the left side to score Hunt for the Monarchs’ first run of the game. Mike Ellsworth executed a perfect hit and run play through the right side to move Kivett to third. Kyle Eudy singled to right center to score Kivett and advance Ellsworth to third. Scott Russell reached first as Hawks’ pitcher Kevin Patton tried to make the play at home, but Ellsworth scored and Eudy moved to second. Brad Davis walked to load the bases and Brian Halpin hit a ground rule double down the left field line to score Eudy and Russell for the 5-2 lead. Dustin Proctor grounded out to third but scored Davis for the sixth run of the inning. Hunt ended the inning with a grounder to short. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth, but the Monarchs came out to score another run in the seventh. Davis reached on a defensive error by the Hawks and moved to second on a single to right by Halpin. Hunt singled with a short fly ball to center that scored Davis on the play. In the bottom of the eighth inning Russell singled to right field and moved to second on a single by Halpin. Proctor hit a triple to the fence in centerfield to score both Russell and Halpin. The Monarchs took a 10-2 lead on a single by Hunt to score Proctor. Methodist pitcher Chris Toth finished the complete game only giving up one hit in the ninth to secure the win. The Monarchs will host Lynchburg in a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 2 pm. |
