Methodist Opens the Season with 4-1 Win Over LaGrange
Three-run fourth inning gives Monarchs first win of the year

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- LaGrange jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Monarchs tied the game in the third and took the win in the fourth to earn the first win the year.  Methodist starts the season 1-0 overall, while LaGrange falls to 0-2.

The Panthers scored first after Michael Sims hit a double to start the game.  Sims advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Seth Tucker and scored on the single by Patrick Langley.

Brad Davis got the first hit for the Monarchs in the first inning.  He advanced to second on a passed ball, but was picked off to end the inning.  The second inning went scoreless before the Monarchs strung some hits together in the third to score the tying run.  Seth Kivett singled to start the inning and advanced to third on Davis' single to right field.  Jonathan Spivey's single scored Kivett and send Davis to second.  Kyle Eudy singled to fill the bases, but Billy Quinn's line drive was caught to end the inning.

The Monarchs picked up where they left off in the bottom of the fourth with three hits on top of two Panther errors.  Scott Russell and Dustin Proctor scored on a triple by Seth Kivett before Brian Halpin drove in Kivett on a double to take the 4-1 lead.

Junior pitcher Chase Cates only allowed one hit in the fifth inning forced Jesse Brown to fly out to center to leave two stranded in the sixth.  The Panthers would grab four more hits, but the Monarch defense held on for the win.  Cates finished the game only allowing one run in 10 hits and 3 strikeouts.

The Monarchs will finish the series with LaGrange on Sunday at 2 pm.
