Methodist Holds Off Lynchburg for 13-11 Win

Junior Dustin Proctor's 3-run home run gives Monarchs the lead in the fifth

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Lynchburg started off with a 5-0 lead, but Methodist cut into that with a grand slam from sophomore Seth Kivett and went on to take the 13-11 win. The Monarchs move to 6-2 this season while Lynchburg moves to 3-4 overall.

Lynchburg scored a run in the first and second innings before scattering three hits in the third to score three additional runs and take a 5-0 lead. Methodist had just one hit through the first two innings but freshman Tripp Lancaster led off the bottom of the third inning with a walk and senior Scott Russell reached on an error, moving Lancaster to second. Sophomore Brian Halpin advanced both runners on a sacrifice fly before senior Michael Carter walked to load the bases. Kivett stepped up and knocked one over the fence for his second grand slam this season, moving Methodist to within one run.

The Monarchs went hitless in the fourth, but Halpin led off the fifth with a solo shot to left center to tie the game at five. Carter was walked again and Kivett singled to left field. With two outs, junior Dustin Proctor hit a home run to left center to give Methodist the 8-5 lead. The Hornets scored their sixth run in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly, but the Monarchs struck back in the bottom of the inning. Lancaster hit a single to shortstop and moved to second on Russell's sacrifice bunt. A failed pickoff attempt allowed Lancaster to score for the 9-6 lead. Lynchburg snuck another run in the seventh, but Methodist was able to score another four runs in the seventh on hits from senior Kyle Eudy and junior Kenly Locklear, a sacrifice fly from Halpin along with two walks and a Lynchburg error.

Methodist led 13-7 heading into the eighth inning, but Lynchburg kept battling. The Hornets scored three runs in the eighth inning on a single, triple and a home run. Methodist came up empty in the bottom of the inning, but held Lynchburg to just one run in the ninth to preserve the 13-11 win.

Kivett and Locklear both finished 2-for-5 from the plate while freshman Jason Ridenhour earned the win on the mound in three innings pitched.

The Monarchs will take the road this weekend traveling to Huntingon and LaGrange.
