March 28, 2007 LYNCHBURG, VA— The Monarchs were down 1-0 to start the fourth inning but came out with four runs in the fourth to take the lead. They held on through the final innings on top of a rain delay to earn the 11-8 win in eight innings. Methodist improves to 20-7 overall while Lynchburg falls to 13-10. Freshman Brian Halpin led a big two-out rally in the top of the fourth with a single to right field. He moved into scoring position on a wild pitch for sophomore Philip Betterly to score Halpin on a single to center. Senior Matt Hunt and junior Michael Carter followed with singles to move Betterly around for the score and freshman Seth Kivett drove in both Hunt and Carter on a single to center. With the 4-1 lead, the Monarchs came back and scored three more runs in the fifth on two hits by Halpin and Betterly combined with a defensive error by the Hornets. Lynchburg battled back to 7-6 with five runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Methodist responded with three runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth to secure the win. Lynchburg scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Methodist won 11-8. Halpin finished 5-for-5 from the plate while Kivett went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Sophomore Elliott Bisplinghoff pitched the first five and a third innings to earn the win. Freshmen Fred Geisinger and AJ Vedrani came in for relief to preserve the win. Methodist will host Averett on Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 2 pm in a USA South weekend series. |
