Elliott Bisplinghoff moves to 7-0 on the season with a win over the Hornets

FAYETTEVILLE, NC -  The Monarchs' offense was running on all cylinders in game one to take the 7-4 win before Lynchburg came back to overtake Methodist 8-1 in game two.  The Monarchs move to 28-11 on the season while Lynchburg moves to 21-16 this year.

In game one, the Monarchs took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Matt Hunt led off with a walk and Jonathan Spivey laid down the sacrifice bunt to move Hunt to second.  Mike Ellsworth hit a RBI single to right centerfield to score Hunt.

The Monarchs kept up the offense in the second inning with two runs on two hits.  Brian Halpin and Dustin Proctor had consecutive singles and Hunt was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Spivey reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Halpin on the play.  Proctor went on to score on a failed pickoff attempt for the 3-0 lead.

The Hornets scored two runs in the top of the fifth, but the Monarchs responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Hunt led off with the triple down the right field line and Spivey hit the RBI single to center to score Hunt.  Seth Kivett hit his third home run of the season to score Spivey.  Brad Davis reached on a single to center, but was caught stealing in a rundown.  Scott Russell did score on the play for the 7-2 lead.  The Hornets would score two more runs in the top of the sixth, but the Monarchs held on for the 7-4 win.  Elliott Bisplinghoff remains undefeated with the win to go 7-0 on the season.

Both teams scored early in game two.  Lynchburg took the 1-0 lead on two hits and an error, but the Monarchs tied the game when Hunt was hit by a pitch to lead off.  Hunt stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch all during Spivey's at bat.

Lynchburg regained the lead with a run in the top of the fourth and jumped out 5-1 with three runs in the fifth.  The Monarchs five runners on base, but couldn't score as the Hornets went on to score another run in the sixth and two in the seventh to take the 8-1 win.  Kurt Kelly drew the loss on the mound while Sean Campbell took the win for Lynchburg.

Hunt finished 2-for-4 on the day to lead the Monarchs while Spivey and Kivett each had two RBI.

The Monarchs will play the Methodist alumni on Saturday at 1 pm before hosting York on May 5th at 7 pm.
