N.C. Wesleyan Defeats Methodist

Senior Scott Russell led the Monarchs with a three-run home run

ROCKY MOUNT, NC - After Methodist won game one on Saturday, the N.C. Wesleyan Bishops came back to defeat the Monarchs 13-4 on Sunday. Methodist moves to 16-7 overall and 4-2 in the USA South while N.C. Wesleyan is 15-6-1 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

N.C. Wesleyan took the early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a walk and a hit. The Monarchs scored their first run in the top of the second when junior Brad Davis reached on an error and moved to second on the throw. Junior Billy Quinn singled to right field for Davis to score and the cut the lead to one. In the bottom of the third, the Bishops took a 3-1 lead after a lead off double from Matt Smith.

In the top of the fifth, Quinn led off with a single and senior Michael Carter laid down the sacrifice bunt to move Quinn to second. Sophomore Brian Halpin reached on an error that allowed Quinn to move to third. Senior Scott Russell hit the three-run home run for the Monarchs to take a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Bishops tied the game at four in the bottom of the inning and shut the Monarchs down in the sixth and seventh innings. In the bottom of the seventh, N.C. Wesleyan put together six runs on six hits for the 10-4 lead. The Bishops' Jason Gay hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth for the 13-4 lead. Methodist came up empty in the top of the ninth for N.C. Wesleyan to take the win.

Senior Chris Toth went six innings on the mound in the loss. Senior Robert Kisiah, sophomore Josh Andrade and sophomore Alex Sholar combined to pitch in relief. Ben Moore pitched the complete game win for N.C. Wesleyan.

The Monarchs will host Tufts University on Wednesday at 4 pm.
