March 18, 2007 DEMOREST, GA- The Methodist baseball team traveled to Demorest, Georgia this weekend to face Rhodes College as well as host Piedmont College. The Monarchs lost 6-1 to Rhodes in game one, but came back and beat Piedmont 8-1 and 3-2 in a Saturday-Sunday series. Methodist improves to 14-6 overall while Rhodes moves to 19-2 and Piedmont stands at 8-13. Methodist and Rhodes battled scoreless during the first six innings on Saturday afternoon before Rhodes scored the first run in the top of the seventh inning. After only five hits through the first eight innings, the Lynx rattled off five in the ninth to score five runs and take a 6-0 lead. A two-out single by freshman Brian Halpin scored junior Kyle Eudy in the bottom of the ninth, but the Monarchs came up short 6-1. Later Saturday evening, the Monarchs took on Piedmont College. The Lions scored a run early in the first, but Methodist tied the game in the third on a RBI double by senior Mike Ellsworth before scoring the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice by senior Jonathan Spivey. Sophomore Billy Quinn hit a single later in the inning to score senior Matt Hunt and take a 3-1 lead. In the top of the ninth inning, the Monarchs scored five runs on three hits and two errors by the Lions. Junior Chris Toth pitched seven innings for the Monarchs to earn the win, while freshman Freddy Geisinger entered in relief to get the save in the 8-1 win. The Monarchs and the Lions went back to Loudermilk Field on Sunday afternoon for the second game of the series. The two teams each scored a run in the fourth inning when freshman Seth Kivett led off the top of the inning with a walk and scored on a single by Halpin. Piedmont junior Andy House tied the game on a home run before the Lions took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Monarchs came back and scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning after Eudy led off with a single and junior Scott Russell walked. Sophomore pitcher Elliott Bisplinghoff went seven innings to earn the win for Methodist while Geisinger finished things up on the mound to earn the save. The Monarchs will be at home this week hosting Endicott at 4 pm on Tuesday, Tufts at 4 pm on Wednesday and Lawrence at 7 pm on Thursday.
